Maybe I'm crazy, but I think even in her AI days she was too thin for Tracy. I wish I could see some good ole Ricki Lake in the movie sized girls take on the role.

I can see her a Tracy/Amber too. A little bit as Penny too. I can see her as Shelley because she seems very bubbly to me. LOL. Updated On: 12/31/05 at 11:40 AM
I saw Jenn Gambatese as Penny and Caissie Levy as Penny. I wodner how Diana will interpret the role. Also, it might draw more people to the show. Can anybody see her as Amber a little bit?
I wonder if she will get top billing. Updated On: 12/31/05 at 12:57 PM
guys, a musical IS a kind of play...a play with music, get it? And Diana is very slim, I don't know why people are saying shes not small enough for it? Besides I don't think it's written in stone that Penny is a size -0 chatacter.
And whoever said she should be sweeping the stage - jealous much?? Wow people are rude.
"And Diana is very slim, I don't know why people are saying shes not small enough for it? Besides I don't think it's written in stone that Penny is a size -0 chatacter." Exactly. The first woman I ever saw play Penny was definitely not a size 0. I'm not understanding the obsession with Penny's weight.
No one said Kerry Butler wasn't a size 0. Nor did --->I<--- say Kerry Butler was the first person ---->I <--- saw play Penny. When one is so eager to make bitchy comments, one usually forgets how to read. Updated On: 12/31/05 at 01:34 PM
"She's a servicable singer, but not the brightest of things..."
Diana didn't write it. The person who did was probably excited when they posted the news. The news likely came directly from her mother or agent and was passed on to the fan club (which they are affiliated with based on her mother doing blogs).
Diana was shockingly good in West Side Story and more than held her own opposite the wonderful JoAnn Hunter. Aaron Ramey, who played "Tony" had nothing but praise for her skill and professionalism: "I'm currently finishing up a great production of West Side Story at American Musical Theatre of San Jose, where Saigon played right after Paper Mill. I'm starring opposite the lovely, sweet and very talented Diana Degarmo - runner-up in the third season of American Idol. I'll admit that I was nervous when we started, but she has been a joy to work with. We've got 6 more shows, so if you're in the Bay area, come on by!! " -www.aaronramey.com
Let's give her a chance. I actually can see her being a perfect Penny and she is a huge fan of musicals and theatre in general. If she held up so well doing the lead in her first musical I think she's a pretty good bet to handle a supporting role here. We shall see.
I just don't see how you coudl have possibly seen enough of her acting abilities on her AI snippets of singing that would make anyone sound so certain that she'd be perfect for this role OR tracy.
That's not to say that it's okay to say she'd suck at it or anything, but saying that she'd be great is like...how do you justify that? When did she ever show the quirkiness, character acting, or comedic abilities to tackle either role that makes you think she'd be 'great', as some say, in either role? Saying she was great in West Side Story is odd to me as justification becuase vocally AND acting-wise it's a complete 180 from what Tracy or Penny requires in Hairspray. If she was great in WSS, then it's cool to say "I saw her and the girl can act, I wouldn't be surprised if she was good at this" but...I'm just really baffled that people really think "wow, she'll be so great" - why do you think that? how could you possibly know?
I say if it happens, it'll be a big shot for her to show what she's capable of, or to knock herself out of a possible musical theatre career if she tanks because she's trying to do too much to soon.
I don't think Hairspray is in need of ticket sales that they'd pull in the stunt casting of a big name, plus she's not all THAT big of a name at all - if they offered it to her, I'd trust that she earned it in hte audition process. I've seen several different casts of Hairspray and never disliked it yet, I think they do a fine job casting that show.
This could be the exception, but til she's up on that stage, y'can't really know...
If I show you the darkness I hold inside, will you bring me to light?
Diana played the role of Maria in West Side Story for 2 weeks in San Jose, CA. She was asked to audtion for the role and she ended up getting the lead, Maria. I was able to see Diana in this play which was really amazing. Diana pulled off every scene and her vocals were outstanding. Especially the last scene where everything is dramatic, so perfect. She also got outstanding reviews from people who went into the show not thinking she was going to do great. I will come and post them if you want. ALSO, there were such good reviews and everything that they wanted to bring the show other places, such as Texas. They still might do that.
Just because Diana was only 16 when she was on Idol and all she did was sing does not mean she can't do other things. She is capable of doing many other things and she loves theatre. I don't think you should judge a person on what you have heard or have not seen. Some of you have seen her on American Idol, but that's probably all you have bothered to do. She has done a lot since then and deserves the respect you guys are not giving her.
Also, Diana's site (dianad.com) is associated with Diana and her mom/family. Every fact from there is true. Diana was OFFERED the role of Penny in this play obviously because they thought she deserved it. Just because she was asked to do this role, does not mean she will take it, also what the news on DianaD says.
I think Diana would be great as Penny. She can do many wonders. I don't think you all should say anything disrespectful to Diana until you see what she can really do. =] Thanks!
Let me start off by saying that the site that posted this news is run by people that personally know Diana and her mother and her mother is also associated with the site, so this news is not a rumor or anything, it's true. And like it states, she was offered the role. No further news has been posted since. Also, like mentioned in some previous posts, Diana starred as the lead role in the show West Side Story in San Jose, CA, and I was lucky enough to be able to see her in this show, and she nailed the part. Every note, every song, every line was nailed. And if you have seen the movie West Side Story, then you know that the main character (Maria) has an accent. Diana had to take lessons in order to be able to not only speak with that accent, but sing with it also. So props to her for pulling this part off. Diana is the sweetest most down-to-earth person you'll ever meet and she has the potential to do anything that she sets her mind to so if she decides to take this part, no doubt, she'll pull it off. I am a huge fan of Diana and I have had the pleasure of meeting her several times in 2005. Just give her a chance, she'll be great if she does decide to take this part.
Here are some recent pictures of her. Just thought I would post them.
=) Thanks! And I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I just wanted to share mine and my thoughts on this.
