Oh, and when do the critics usually go to see the show? Isnt it around a day or two before it opens? If so, the reviews should be interesting (LaChanze better watch out for Riedel's column).
I doubt very much that LaChanze is happy about having to miss the show. Let's just wish her well and a speedy recovery instead of telling her what she should watch out for, shall we? I'm sure she could use our support and good thoughts right now. And best of luck to Kenita as well!
I didn't say I wished she would be sick forever. I love LaChanze, hence my avatar, its just that she's already missed 3 (?) performances out of a month of previews which at first may not seem like a lot but for previews, especially it kind of is. I was just saying that the critics should be coming soon if they havent already and if they come and she's not performing, she's in trouble. It will be reported in papers and columns and it could (as Margo mentioned to me a while back) be the difference between her and LuPone in the Tony race. For instance, I strongly believe that if Donna Murphy's absences werent bashed constantly by Riedel, she would have had a very very VERY good chance at winning the Tony. And, all I said was she tends to miss a lot of performances and doesnt have the best attendance record in the past not that she was faking her illness. I do hope she gets better, I wasnt saying anything the affect of "I hope she's happy that shes letting all these audiences down". I was just posting what I thought.
Well most of the MAJOR critics have already seen the show. Broadway.com really doesnt make the much of a difference. But even if it did - Kenitta Miller is a PHENOM performer. After seeing her in Dessa Rose and last summer in Papermills Ragtime (as Sarah) - the girl has what it takes to make the Broadway theatre hers tonight! BREAK A LEG Ms. Miller!
I hope LaChanze gets well soon. Best of luck to Kenita.....she will do great! Is that true that you have to perform on opening night to be eligible for a Tony Award?
The Tony committee, in absence of any other direction, will use the opening night Playbill to determine eligibility questions, but this is an OLD rule that goes back to the days when all the critics and lots of Tony voters used to attend opening nights (decades ago). However, producers certainly have the power to petition the committee to make different rulings (just as they can request in writing that specific performers billed below the title be considered for the Lead rather than Featured category).
Realistically, if LaChanze was too ill to go on opening night, but returned shortly thereafter and the producers requested she and not Miller be considered for Lead, it's highly likely that the committee would agree and treat LaChanze as eligible.

I saw the show on Sunday and sat next to a member of the creative team who said Brantley was at that performance. Needless to say, La Chanze gave the performance of her life!
That said, I'm kind of in the camp that anticipates she may miss many performances. She's always been a performer who is often overcome with difficulties performing vocaly demanding roles.
