I just saw the most ripped off Production of AIDA,everything from the sets to the costumes were copied from the B'way production.I was amazing how well some of them were copied, but it also pissed me off b/c they took credit for it.They also had made a recording which they were selling and well...the 3 leads were all under 15.

There's really no harm in trying to recreate a beautiful thing.

"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."

How is it they were allowed to make and sell a CD of their production?

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Isn't one of the requirements in obtaining the rights of Disney shows that the costumes not resemble the ones used on Broadway? And making and selling CDs of the production definitely sounds like copyright infringement. They'd seriously better watch their backs, because you don't want to mess with Disney.

No, there is no such things in the contract to do a Disney show. If you've got the money, you could do an exact replica of Beauty and the Beast.

And who knows, maybe they actually asked permission to make the CD. Things like that happen.

This is pitiful. I've seen productions shut down for fewer reasons than those listed for this production of Aida.

There's got to be some copyright rule about recording and selling your own Aida cd. When my orchestra tried to record the music we played at our concert on cd, we were not able to due to copyrights and such. That's why I have a feeling some rule is being broken.

I also think re-creating the sets and costumes is cool. It probably looks better than the horribly designed sets we used for my school's production of Aida.

If you go through the proper channels, you may be able to get permission to record. It happens all the time.

well, my freshman year of high school we did "Les Misérables," and four other schools in the area did it right after us. one of the productions was an exact Broadway replica, in set and blocking, but they used our costumes and props.

...how lame is that, first of all?

second of all, i guess people do it all the time, because they don't realize that shows can be recreated and re-envisioned, i guess. oh well, too bad for them.

When a high school does Les Miz, it sort of "has" to be close to the original. People go to Les Miz expecting something similar to what they saw on Broadway. There are going to have to be some big-time productions that do it completely different, then other productions wil feel like they can be original, too.

Yeah, you can definately copy costumes/sets. In fact, some shows come with diagrams and such, telling you how to make the set.

not necessarily, trpguyy. ours was not the same blocking or set design as Broadway, and our costumes were different in many ways (ballgowns, Cosette's clothes, the 'uniforms' of the guards, etc.) we had a turntable and a bridge that were always onstage, and different things flying in and out of the rigging.

what i mean is, i don't think it's necessarily true that someone bigger has to do it differently before the rest of us can. ours was very different from the other schools' shows, as well as different from the touring production we saw this past winter.

No, I mean COMPLETELY different. I've seen prodictions that are different, but they all seem to be channelling the original production. It would be interesting to make Miz almost unrecognizable. Except for the music, it's an entirely different show.

It will be done, but the trend will have to be started by a production that gets lots of publicity.

oh, i get you now. like, how my cousin's school did "the taming of the shrew" but it was set in 1940's new york, in little italy? :) i understand you now.

that would be very interesting, especially with such a legend as "Les Mis".
