What's with Proof casting?

Ok, so Gwenyth is playing Catherine who is supossed to be 25. That's fine. But, Hal is supossed to be 28 or 29 and Jake Gyllenhal is playing Hal? How does that work? He is what, 22? And he looks it. There's no way he's gonna look older than Paltrow. Any thoughts?

There is no way he'll ever look older than her, but he may at least be able to pull off the math geek thing.

The thing I don't understand about this movie -- is it true the father isn't dead? I read that in some story, but never got it verified....

I just saw it performed in San Diego and there was NO doubt that her father is dead. There's a funeral and everything. I didn't see any hint that he was actually alive.
