I was thinking, B&TB teaches some pretty dangerous lessons to young girls. The beast is horrible abusive and cruel to Belle, yet it's her responsibility to be patient and remain kind and reinterpret his behavior.
Hmmmm. Never thought of that before. I've always thought that Disney movies teach young girls that they should ahve lots of clevage. But thats just me.
I work in a Children's Theatre and we get into these conversations all the time. These stories show what is the very best thing in the world: Finding a rich guy(preferably a handsome prince) and never having to work. That is why I loved being in SHREK(stage show not movie): it changed the bar.
David walked into the valley
With a stone clutched in his hand
He was only a boy
But he knew someone must take a stand
There will always be a valley
Always mountains one must scale
There will always be perilous waters
Which someone must sail

Yea guys, you can find somethign like that in EVERYTHING - but no one actually thinks like that. Little 8 year old girls don't sit in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST thinking of the messages. Afterall, that's not the overall messsage of Beauty and the Beast - the overall message is that "what counts is on the inside." Blah Blah Blah...
They're meant for entertainment, not for self-help.

I don't know, don't you think it's possible that so many killers once watched BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and saw the beast murder Gaston and thought "wow, if I murder someone, it will be okay and I'll get the hot girl!" It's very logical.
PLEASE GIVE ME A F'N BREAK

Actually, Gaston falls off the roof of the castle as a result of him fighting with the beast. And I'm pretty sure at some point in the fight scene the beast lays a hand on Gaston. Yea, he does. Moreso in the movie - doesn't he dangle Gaston over the edge with his "paw" around his neck?

The Beast saves Gaston initally from falling, admonishes Gaston to get out. The Beast turns to Belle, and is stabbed in the back by Gaston twice, and then Gaston falls backward off the castle.
Wow. I'm not going to argue with someone who knows the fight scene of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST that perfectly...it's kind of scary, actually. I was just making a joke and used BEAUTY because someone mentioned it before. I'm sorry if my incorrect depiction of the final scene in a Disney musical offended you.

no, strappy, you used an incorrect interpretation to lash out at a poster whose opinion was at odds with yours. when faced with the facts of the scene, instead of admitting your error, you chose to try to belittle the person who knew more about the scene than you. no one seemed offended but you here. a good therapist might help you with that victim complex and make it easier for you interact with others without lashing out at perceived slights.

Don't read too much into it. I agree with Munkustrap - all I got out of B&tB (My favorite Disney and still one of my alltime favs) was 1) its whats one the inside that counts 2)when youre beautiful inside you are outside too. Oh AND great musical numbers and animation. I Love this movie-Belle is so admirable; she's independent and smart. Finally! Now SNOW WHITE teaches bad lessons to girls...
Rosencrantz: "Be happy - if you're not even HAPPY what's so good about surviving? We'll be all right. I suppose we just go on."
- from Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
I never thought of it that way. Although it may be true, a majority of most likely don't look at it this way, so this "bad lesson" isn't that effective.
"We like to snark around here. Sometimes we actually talk about theater...but we try not to let that get in our way." - dramamama611
I wasn't thinking of the exact scene, I was joking with "MaTakeaLookatME" - it was a joke, don't take everything so seriously. It's amazing how people call you on EVERYTHING...I wasn't going for accuracy.
And I didn't LASH out at anyone, that's a little dramatic. I was talking to one other person - we were joking about the beauty and the beast thing.
It still cracks me up how seriously people take this...
