Don't we all like to impress others with the famous people we know? Name-drop here.

I'd rather do it in the context of posts that have a subject related to the names.

I once sold a book to Ruth Buzzi. Does that count for anything?

How about Tom Hanks used to work for my theatre company? That has got to count for, like, half a point or something.

I went to high school with multi-Grammy winning opera diva Dawn Upshaw. I was "Doc" to her Maria in WEST SIDE STORY.

Also in her class (she's a year younger than me)was Kim Thayil, former lead guitarist for Soundgarten. His mom was my jr. high English teacher.

Why encourage it??? It's hard enough not to do it when you want to... and I don't know about anyone else, but after you do it, it feels like you've done something really dirty, even if your intentions weren't malicious.

Name dropping sucks ass. Loving a person because they're fabulous and happen to fall into a "well known" category is one thing but loving that you know a person because of "who" they are is quite another.

Kristie - you will be happy to know that I and my family have quoted the lovely Steven for years now. I knew of his passing when it happened, and was very sad. One of many, I'm afraid. But at least we get his comic antics preserved for us to enjoy forever re: Name-drop here - stupid topic

Hey Kristie - a friend of mine, a singer, was also good friends with Steven! I've heard only the most wonderful things about him.

'Name dropping sucks ass. Loving a person because they're fabulous and happen to fall into a "well known" category is one thing but loving that you know a person because of "who" they are is quite another.'

DailyHilton: Thanks for that very succinct statement. If you truly DO know someone who is a 'name' or 'celeb' (I mean not just that you sell them coffee at the corner Starbucks, but you KNOW them) then if you are name dropping you are not a good friend or family member.

These are PEOPLE whose privacy and relationships should be protected and you should CARE that you are not using them for your own feelings of superiority.

It was a very long night (and am paying for it this morning)... actually, I'm amazed I was as coherent as I was! AMAZING!

Thank you, IAmSam. I mean we're all guilty of name dropping here and there on occasion, sometimes without even realizing what you're doing. But to consciously make a thread doing so... I think that's just asking for trouble. Esp. if you actually are friends with a person. If it's relevent to mention them in a given situation, that's one thing, but a thread devoted to bragging...?? Hmmm.
