What cabaret shows/acts have you enjoyed most, and why? And secondly, what have you not enjoyed about a particular format, style, or performer?

I have a question. When singers do concerts at Birdland or Joe's Pub or other similar places, is that considered a cabaret show?

This seems like a perfect thread for joeyjoe and redhot to shill red's new cabaret act. re: Cabaret (the genre, not the show)

Yay!

Ok, I'm fairly new to the cabaret scene and I love most of what I've seen. Some standouts would be Stephanie Block's amazing show at the Birdland, Mandy Gonzalez's concert at the Pink Room, and Louise Pitre's show at Joe's Pub.

Tell me why, though, Mattio. Elaborate. What was good about them, and was there anything you didn't like, and why...

Wow I almost forgot one of my favorites. Jason Robert Brown's marathon length show at Le Jazz Au Bar was absolutely amazing. It must've been around 2 and a half hours and I was still left wanting more. Not only was he wonderful (as was the venue) but he had Brian D'Arcy James, Julia Murney, Carolee Carmello, and others up there with him. It was really wonderful.

Ok. Stephanie's show was the perfect length and she had great song selection. A great mix of pop, broadway, jazz, standards and I think a little country. She had a great story song which was custom written about her journey as a performer and she ended the concert on a huge high with I'm Not That Girl and Defying Gravity.

Mandy's concert was so great because it was a reflection of her dynamic personality. It had a rock and roll edge but it also had space for quiet songs and Max Von Essen. She had really good banter in between her songs and the show was seamless.

The theme for Louise Pitre's concert was eclectic and it worked. She used her french roots and the concert as a whole told a story. She also had some great comic relief including a parody of "The Winner Takes It All".

by far the best ever (and I hope for a long time in her memory), the late-great Nancy LaMott -- never have I seen a performer so comfortable with a piano and a stool...her interpretations of the american songbook and contemporary music will never be surpassed
