A friend of mine has a theory that the best television scripts are written when the cast has an equal number of male and female leading actors.

She considers this to include "Friends", "Will & Grace", "The Brady Bunch", and "Step by Step". (she also mentioned "Gilligan's Island", but technically that's 4m:3f.)

Any thoughts?

Though that may be true in some cases, some great TV, such as Seinfeld, is not even. Seinfeld has 3 males and 1 female. But in all those that you mentioned, it's absolutely true.

That's an interesting theory. I'm going to try to find more examples.

I like shows with all women. Especially when they're hot... and gay.

She said it was best that way because you had a lot of different directions to go in terms of plot. Something about having lots of choices plot-wise, and characters with different perspectives... I don't remember.

The fact is that most shows have equal numbers of male and female parts for that very reason.

i love that show! i wish it was still running though. sorry. OT. i think that in some cases (friends etc.) this theory is true, but in others it is false. there are many great shows that i have seen with a range in male characters and female characters.

I Love Lucy is 2 and 2.

Mary Tyler Moore Show is about split too.

Full House also split. Danny, Jesse, and Joey. Steph, DJ, and Michelle.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
