This is soooo hard. Ok, add my vote to "One day More" from Les Mis.
But, "Can't Stop the Beat" is also brilliant. "And I am telling you I'm not going" is unique and maybe I'll get bashed for this, but I believe that " The Phantom of the Opera" is a magnificent song !!!! Ok, I'll stop now because I am rambling.

Take care

"Ladies Who Lunch" from Company. Not sure why, but this song is one of my all time favorites.

Well, that indeed is a hard question... I love so many songs but the one that really gets my adrenaline going and makes me want to get up and dance is "You Can't Stop The Beat' from 'Hairspray.' Every time I go see the show I come out with a good feeling after hearing that song. There are dozens of other songs I really love though. -Penny

"I'm a pretty girl, mama." -Penny Lou Pingleton, Hairspray
"You like football, Ed?" "Yeah..." "Good. Me too." -Chad & 'Ed', All Shook Up

"Holding to the Ground" from Falsettos is definitely my favorite song of all time.

Holding to the ground
As the ground keeps shifting...
Trying to keep sane
As the rules keep changing...
Keeping up my head as my heart falls out of sight...
Everything will be alright...

Is this possible? I have a favorite or two from every show, but no all time greatest broadway song.... This is impossible! "Suddenly Seymour" is ONE of the greatest!

It changes from moment to moment... but I'm in love with Everything's Coming Up Roses from Gypsy.

Wow! This is difficult. I would have to say Empty Chair at Empty Tables from Les Miz.

Songof theShoebox--

"What I Did For Love" has nothing to do with the show? Have you seen the show? At the end of the show, after Paul re-injures his knee which may result in the end of his career, Zack asks the cast, "What would you do if you couldn't dance anymore?" All the dancers have different responses, but Diana talks about wanting to dance for the love of it, whether she ever becomes a star or not. Just being able to dance in a Broadway show was all she ever dreamed of and if her career was suddenly over she'd look back on her time as a dancer with fondness, not regret. That's when she begins to sing the song. If she could never dance again, she "won't forget, can't regret what [she] did for love." Nothing to do with the show????? Or did you only see that travesty of a movie? DON'T base any opinion of "A Chorus Line" on that fraudulent piece of celluloid that is terrible representation of a brilliant show.

Some excellent choices....lots of "Les Miz"...though the show is the most emotionally moving musical for me in total, a single "best of all time" song from it is hard to hang my hat on....Sooooooooooooooooooo I pick "One" from "A Chorus Line", because of A. the significance of the show....It begat "Fame","Stepping Out" and a host of other "backstage dramas" that glorified the performer..and beyond that influenced performing arts magnet schools that grew in the 80's and 90's. B. It's meaning to anyone anywhere who has auditioned for any show at any level....and most importantly C. I never get tired of listening to this very catchy and melodic number...Therefore class "One" succeeds in emotional appeal, symbollic appeal, intellectual appeal and aesthetic appeal. .....Dismissed.

I didn't read through the 3 pages of posts, so I don't know if someone else mentioned this. "Lullaby of Broadway" from 42nd Street because it sings about the best thing -- Broadway!
