Reviews on The Outsiders are all over the place! The one consistent is people love the choreography and rain scene at the end, but seems that’s all there is. I see many saying the story is hard to follow and, with a few exceptions, the acting is “meh” at best. Some people take umbridge to the fact that Cherry, who plays a major role in Pony Boy’s growth, is sorely underdeveloped. I have also seen specific mention in a few posts about the actor playing Johnny not being up to snuff. With all the amazing young actors of color out there this role could have been very different with the right person! I saw this in La Jolla and then finally grabbed a ticket for preview last week and thought the changes made were good but not enough. I think this needed more time, less singing and dancing, and some real solid acting to be the next great thing.

Not really, for the most part most reviews from people who have seen it on Broadway and are commenting on here are positive.

Angelina has approval over ALL opening night press. Several outlets have been denied.

Does that mean that negative press/reviews will be weeded out (thus, kinda making the reviews worthless, overall)?

What does that mean exactly? Angelina had to approve which critics/press got comp tickets to see the show and review it?

Sorry -- but that is bullsh*t.  You need better sources.

What "press" are you speaking of?? Press, as it relates to critics and journalists providing other editorial coverage, rarely attend on opening nights. Tonight is the final press performance before opening tomorrow. I'm friends with many folks in this realm, some are journos for larger publications and others for less trafficked outlets, but all of them had access to this show.

If you are specifically talking about opening night, its a totally different type of press in attendance. Opening nights are all about red carpet coverage, and most of the press covering those arrivals do not stay for the performance.

So really I think you're talking a bunch of bull

At the matinee: 4/10/24.

Surprisingly good. A true ensemble piece with a fresh-faced, appealing, and talented cast. The trio of brothers (aside from their glorious voices) are engaging and have great chemistry, and others in the cast also shine. While the book is at times meandering, it's effective enough to frame the music, choreography, and design elements, which are often thrilling. I especially admired the "cinematic" touches of stop-motion used throughout the show, culminating with the mélange of movement and lighting during the rumble. Fantastic!

It was also nice to discover a cast of gifted unknowns (at least to me), with many making their Broadway debuts. Their "unshiny" grit set the perfect tone for the production.

Today's matinee was full of Elementary and High School kids. Two young boys seated next to me in the orchestra were riveted throughout, and could not control their emotions by the end. "Out of the mouths of babes..."

Was at matinee today......wow, this show is all about the direction and choreography.

The book is fine as is the score......but where the show is great is in the dancing!

Loved seeing so many school kids in the audience. They seemed to love it.

Okay, I am in. I want to see the show.  For those that have seen - where are the better seats?  Is second row Orchestra too close?

any advice would be so welcome

We sat first row mezzanine and thought to perfect especially for all the lighting and rumble.

That area is known as the splash zone for small pieces of rubber.

Someone called it the “grit pit” for the first two rows.

Seems opening night reviews confirm what I have seen on many posts…mixed bag, very neutral with praise for staging, lighting and choreography, not so much for music and storytelling. Overall, not great news for The Outsiders.
