''Into the Woods'' just opened last night (Nov. 15 ) and will play through Jan. 29, 2023 at Signature Theatre, the Tony-winning regional theater in Arlington, Va. It marks the beginning of ''So Many Possibilities: A Season of Sondheim,'' which will also include ''Pacific Overtures'' (March 7-April 9 ) and ''Sweeney Todd'' (May 16-July 9 ). Signature also has a project called Sharing Sondheim in which they committed to ''speak or sing every lyric that Sondheim wrote for the Broadway stage between now and the end of their season.'' sigtheatre.org/sondheim
Meantime, I just did an interview with Jake Loewenthal, who tells the remarkable story of how he got his foot in the door at Signature with a taped audition for ''Rent'' last year. Since then, he's been on a roll. Besides playing Mark in ''Rent,'' he did Kodaly in Signature's ''She Loves Me'' and now, the Baker in ''Into the Woods.'' Plus, he got a rave in the Washington Post for ''Our Town'' at Shakespeare Theatre Company, and workshopped a new play with Harriet Harris and Jeremy Jordan.
The promos they shared of Jake in the role make him by far the sexiest Baker I have seen haha. I wouldn't want to have a moment in the woods if that moment didn't include him.
Caption: Every so often there was a rare moment of perfect balance when I soared above him.
Heads-up for fans of Signature Theatre: Tomorrow (Sun., Nov. 20), ''Into the Woods'' will be performing a 2 p.m. matinee, where half of all sales will go to the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). As Jake Loewenthal and Erin Weaver note in the Facebook post below, if you can't attend the show, the Signature also is collecting non-perishable foods and canned goods for AFAC in its lobby. AFAC offers free supplemental groceries to families and neighbors in need.
fun seeing the name Erin weaver, we went to college together and were acting partners for a semester
