I saw Gaten in the show tonight (his third show) and I’ve seen the show several times and this is honestly one of those moments where an actor fits the role so perfectly and just knows who their character is so beautifully. The secondary characters in Dear Evan Hansen are truly what you make of them and Gaten does a fantastic job with Jared. He nails the humor and tackles the underlying vulnerability behind Jared’s overly confident exterior perfectly. In the few vocal moments he gets, Gaten sounded wonderful. I had seen Gaten as Gavroche in the Les Mis revival and I am pretty sure I saw him in Priscilla as well and it was so good to see him grown up and back on Broadway.

The audience that came to see him were incredibly respectful and aside from cheering when Jared makes his first entrance, they were very invested and seemed to enjoy the show. The stage door is your usual clusterf*ck but what else is new.

If you’ve not seen the show before or want to see it before closing and you’re a fan of Gaten - you’re in for a great performance from him and the entire cast.

"Anybody that goes to the theater, I think we’re all misfits, so we ended up on stage or in the audience.” --- Patti LuPone.

I saw his second performance (Wed. matinee) and he was very good in the role (as I knew he would be).  He is not quite as "smart assy" as others I've seen, so his Jared was a bit more likeable.  As it was a matinee I saw Mateo Lizcano as Evan and he was awesome; incredibly moving as is the whole show.  The poor lady sitting next to me was really falling apart during 'So Big, So Small'.  The entire cast was wonderful.  I overheard some younger people (early 20s) in a group talking about how different this was from seeing the movie (I think they had only seen the film); they used words like "immediacy, powerful".  The show is still in fantastic shape.  Most of the cast came out the stage door but did not stop, they were each escorted by a security guard.  Of course, most people were waiting for Gaten but he never came out.  But some famous person I've never heard of (Frankie Andre, or something Andre) came out and was carrying his little doggie.  A couple of people went chasing after him after he and his friend walked by.  Again, I have no idea who this person was, but he was well known by the youngsters in the crowd.

Still hoping I someday get to see (and hear) Gaten's buddy and LES MIZ alum Joshua Colley as Evan.  He has such a rich and unique singing voice. That would be amazing. Perhaps he could join the tour.

Joshua hasn't done any theater in six years and he's currently doing TV work. I don't see him coming back anytime soon.

Gaten is perfection for Jared, I have always thought that. Enjoy!

^ This was probably Frankie Grande (Ariana's brother) who posted from the audience that day.

Side note since this is technically a thread about Gaten, but I saw a matinee with Mateo a couple weeks ago and also thought he was excellent. He has a bright future ahead of him and I look forward to seeing what he does next!
