Hi folks! I’m visiting NY later this week and plan to see a lot of theater. I was hoping to check out some yarn/fiber stores while in the area. Does anyone know of any? No big box stores (I have a Michael’s, a Joann’s, and a Hobby Lobby all within 30 minutes of my home), I mean place to get yarn that I couldn’t get at one of those. Thanks!

I know nothing about knitting. But, I often stay at a friend's place on W79 and pass a shop called Knitty City. It's very cute and always busy.

You'll want to visit the Garment District in the West 30s.  Perhaps a forum devoted to sewing and/or knitting will give you a better answer.

Remember you won't get box store prices LOL, but here are a few...

Annie & Co Needlepoint and Knitting (UES)

Lion Brand Studio store (20% off entire store as they close in April) (Chelsea)

Knitty City (UWS)

Purl Soho (but I find them a bit stuffy tbh) (SoHo)

There's at least one in Brooklyn (i think it's named something like General Store)...I found it far to go for such a small store (I'm in Manhattan).

Thanks for your help, everyone! As my itinerary was chock full of shows (2 LCT archive appointments and 7 live productions in five days) I didn’t have time to trek to Brooklyn or the 30s. However, I did take a walk it Knitty City and bought a gorgeous hank of hand-dyed cotton DK yarn. I expected pricey, but the whole stock was even worse than anticipated. I know I can get either a cowl or a hat out of my 397-yd purchase, so I’m happy. I’ll think of this trip every time I wear whatever I end up making with it. Thanks again, lovely BWW posters!
