I noticed that after True West, Choir Boy, and Ruben & Clay begin performances, there will be a few days (before December 30th) where only 2 Broadway theatres will be empty: the Kerr and the Palace. 39 out of 41 is probably the most I've ever heard of running at one time on Broadway. In the time I've spent following Broadway real estate (the last 5 years or so), the highest number I've ever noticed was probably around 35 to 37, but I might be mistaken. (you might even say it's more like 39 out of 40 since the Palace is not available to anyone, and therefor might not "count"
. Has there ever been a time when this many shows were running at once? Has it ever reached 40? If this high demand on theatres keeps up until the Palace re-opens, I wonder if we can get the full 41!

It al depends on you setting a time frame for your question. In 1927-28, the year SHOW BOAT opened, there were over 200 Broadway openings and I assume many more shows were running simultaneously than we have now. But for the last 5 years, you might be right.
