Attended matinee on April 4th

What a misguided production!

Starkeep wanders in and out and if you didn't know who he was you may think he was De Lawd from "Green Pastures"  One horse for the Carousel? Why bother if you are doing the hokey pokey with dancers as prancers. Soliloquy is now Act One closer with a cryptic knife stuck in some driftwood. It is sung out and not acted.  So now Billy cuts his throat. And dies a silent movie death.  Where are all the "bad" characters of color including Billy, Jiggier and the Ballet Barker? Bill mouths the sermon at the end with his last time totally unemotional And of course they cut Julie's response to  Louise's does it hurt?

I could go on.Ugly costumes. Waist high pants!  Traveling curtain with in one scenes. I thought I was watching Show Boat and not Carousel.

An iconic show done in a very old fashioned way and I like old fashions!

I saw one the of the first previews. I had hoped that they would fix some of these issues. Apparently, they haven't.

Just FYI, there is already a very lengthy thread about this revival:

I hated it as well . Truly a weak production.

I’ve seen Carousel twice. While it’s clearly telling a dark story, it’s bringing the topics of abuse and redemption to the forefront; raising the level of awareness which is a good thing. The R/H piece effectively exposes the horrible effects of child and spousal abuse.

Why does 75-80% of audience stand in ovation? Why do a fair number of adults have tears streaming down their cheeks? I suggest it’s because the show strikes a very emotional cord. While it’s clearly a dated show, audiences still seem to enjoy the show, the quality of the performers work, the choreography, the dancers, the songs, and the like. This is clearly evidenced by the two long post-show ovations I witnessed. You naysayers have been overly critical and I suspect, frustrated wannabes. Go re-read the last few posts. So horribly negative (“hate”, “ugly”, etc). Now you can all respond with your usual aggressive negative comments.......
