My wife and I will be in London May 6-9 and am looking at West End shows. We are fortunate to see many Broadway shows and are open equally to musicals and plays.

The Ferryman looks quite interesting but aside from that I’m a bit lost on what to potentially see. National Theatre shows  appear to be Translations, Absolute Hell, and Nine Night. I can’t seem to find much of anything about these regarding expectations. I like to usually purchase tickets in advance for planning sake.

For relevance, our favorite shows we’ve recently seen are The Band’s Visit, Sweat, Come From Away, Hamilton, The Little Foxes, etc - so a wide variety

Any guidance?

The Ferryman is indeed wonderful, I haven't seen it since the original cast left and can't wait to revisit it. The new British musical Bat Out of Hell The Musical is apparently very good and will open in the West End a month before your visit. Chess will be revived at the London Coliseum and, although the cast hasn't been announced yet, the orchestra will be huge - which is encouraging.

Rory Kinnear and Anne-Marie Duff will be playing the Macbeths at the National Theatre, and the Southwark Playhouse will revive Kander & Ebb's The Rink but, again, no casting has been announced yet. But what I'm really looking forward to is the revival of Red with Alfred Molina reprising his role as Rothko and Alfred Enoch.

Thank you very much for responding. Chess is intriguing, I know it is quite divisive! I dislike Shakespeare, so pass on any of his work (I know, I know ....).
