Any thoughts? I saw the Shakespeare Theater production with Egan, Josh Young and Micheal Xavier. It was great and I heard plans of a revival,  is it going to happen after Seattle?

I sure hope so. I love this show and Josh Young is one of my favorite musical actors.

I know the production is going to TUTS next season, so I guess it couldn't come to Broadway until next spring at earliest.

Thanks for that info .... I may actually be able to see it in Houston.

I am hoping too. Secret Garden is one of my favorite recordings.

Never saw it, but the cast recording is maybe the worst thing I've ever heard. No interest in a revival.

It's literally one of the most beautiful OBC recordings ever in my book. It looks like Tam Mutu has replaced Michael Xavier. I saw it in DC but not in Seattle. Here's a clip from Seattle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-VoQF3CP8E Very excited for this to come back in. I can't find a clip of Xavier doing the same

I love Tam Mutu but he seems wrong for this role, particularly playing against Josh Young. Their voices don't quite blend or contrast effectively and he reads as a little too handsome for that role. Also, while he has his moments, his acting can be a bit bland.

Well, there's obviously some hyperbole there, but it's definitely one of the worst musicals I've heard, if not the worst. It's just dreadful. And I'm a big fan of the Agnieszka Holland movie.

"Dreadful"???, well...You are totally welcome to your opinion. It is my opinion that it's one of the most beautiful scores ever written.

VintageSnarker have you seen Tam in this? Or are you judging him by this video snippet? And how do you go from "I love Tam" to "his acting is bland"??? I hear he's quite good in this. But I do agree he may be too good looking for the role. Michael Xavier seemed the same when I saw him do the role in this production in DC...but I can say, from this clip I certainly enjoy Tam's voice more than Michael's. I found Michael's voice a bit thin. Especially next to Josh. Also, I totally buy this pairing as brothers for some reason more than Josh and Michael.

How is the new Mary?

I saw it in Seattle, and I quite liked it! This was the first time I've seen Secret Garden live and so I was really impressed by the Mary. The set was phenomenal, but costumes weren't my favourite. Mary was good. I think Tam was pretty good acting wise, but then again, I haven't seen it before - I will say that it was hard to make out what he  was singing during duets, but that might've been a fault with the sound system (I was sitting pretty far in the back) and not with him.

That was what I thought when they had Ramin playing him in that concert event last year

I'm judging by the video. He seems like a nice person and he has a fantastic voice. I think there are times he can be compelling on stage but there are better actors. I saw him in Zhivago twice, in concert once, and in The New Yorkers. I know of what I speak. Sometimes his acting is flat.

It seems very unlikely to me that this show will ever get a major revival- at least one on a large scale, at any rate. It's a large and technically demanding property that, despite its Tony wins, remains largely unknown.

If the recent Lincoln Center concert was any indication, it's also a far weaker property than many seem to recall.

I would love to see it come back to Broadway - I saw the Shakespeare production in DC and thought it was very good. it was sweet, bright playful made for the masses not overly dark -  I thought Mary could have been a bit more developed in character from her sadness to happiness but other than that she was wonderful as was the extremely talented cast.

But then I saw the Denver production this past weekend and now  I think the Shakespear production is a bit too light and pretty - The Denver production was really amazing and very unexpected - I as many around me were completely, emotionally drained afterwards - It was VERY dark and  a bit scary the Mary was not in the least bit cutsie (  usually cast very pretty and sweet looking ) and very sour and played the role with amazing ease and was able to transfer to a happy child in the end seamlessly her acting was amazing as was her voice -

The scenic design was a bit stark in areas but it made its point and the ghosts were extremely creepy

However the most amazing was Archibald and Lilly's connection in "How could I ever know". It had 50% of the theater sobbing - and there were no cuts that I could see in any of the scenes or songs - as were in the Shakespeare production -

That's the kind of theater I think that should be on broadway - I think the Shakespeare production is a bit sweeter and child like -  hard to explain the difference but there definitely was one!

Sorry to whichever producer or actor from some other production of the secret garden posted the last message but you are such a theater fan that you go to 2 productions of The Secret Garden across the country from each other but joined BroadwayWorld chat boards TODAY? And say THAT?! SHILL ALERT. Don't do that.

The reason I asked about the Mary is because it's a new Mary. I didn't love the one in DC but I have heard the new one is great. I'm curious which little girl it will be when it transfers. I guess we'll see which one they bring to....um, Dallas? I think I read that was the next stop?

Regardless, Lizzie Klemperer has the most beautiful voice and I hope they keep her and don't do some stunt casting. Josh is fantastic in this and can sing me the phonebook. Neville gets a new song by the by. The rest of the cast was also quite good. Oh, and was really cool to see Daisy Egan! She's also wonderful. I'm really interested to see what changes they end up making from DC.

What a pompous ass you are, I LIVE in DC and was at convention at the Denver Center this past weekend when The Secret Garden happened to open here. Amazing to be accused of Shilling because a new member to the board saw two of the same shows by different production companies and had an opinion and voiced them? And now I know why many of my friends feel uncomfortable to share on this board ,  Its people like you that give the rest of us open minded theater advocates and supporters a bad name - shame on you.

This version currently at The Denver Center (directed by Jenn Thompson) looks to have far better staging and visuals - than much of what I have seen from clips of the 5th Avenue co-production.  Very much enjoy the choice to have color blind cast Mary.  Perhaps with a Broadway name or two ....
