Going to see this in Chicago.. Having never seen a production of Jesus Christ Superstar, I'm wondering how offense it would be for a very religious person. Considering bringing a very religious friend. Is this a mistake?

The lyrics refer to Jesus as being "just a man" which is what most people were up in arms over and protesting outside of theatres when the work first premiered. Now it's pretty tame stuff but it does depend on the production. The design and direction very wildly in concept from production to production and it's impossible to guess what may or may not be offensive in this particular staging without seeing it.

I've seen this current production in Chicago, and I can't think of anything any reasonable person would find offensive. It's a rather straightforward production, nothing particularly edgy. Unless your friend is fundamentalist, it should be fine.

Enjoy this production! There are some nice staging choices, and in the role of Mary Magdalene, Danni Smith is giving an amazing performance, as she always does. Not personally my favorite production Theo Ubique has done in recent years, but there's plenty to appreciate.

Would you take your friend to see Book of Mormon? Most would find that show to be much more offensive than JCSS.  I didn't find either one to be offensive, not that it matters.

The key for devout Christians in approaching Jesus Christ Superstar is not to forget that the whole point of it is that it's the retelling of Jesus' last week on earth from the perspective of Judas Iscariot.  With that vantage point, even the most scandalous of productions to me didn't upset me

how was it? when are we going to get a worthy JCS revival on Broadway? The london arena tour directed by Laurence Connor was on the money!! The direction, and actors really nailed the show for me!!
