It was an expensive show. ALW shot himself in the foot when he "fired" not only Patti Lupone (A WELL RESPECTED ACTRESS WITH A VERY LOYAL FOLLOWING who was getting good reviews with the West End Production) he also fired Faye Dunaway before she took to the stage. He blamed them for what was his own short comings.

After these women were treated so poor & so publicly that I think A List talent avoided him. If he ever does do a revival he needs a HUGE NAME to carry the show. Only however a full scale revival should be done if they ever decide to do a revival.

Now as for an actress who should play Norma on Broadway? Well the talent is there & we all have a favorite actress in mind (Catherine Zeta Jones) but chances most them would avoid ALW at all cost.

Andrew Lloyd Webber still has amends to make in order to make actors trust him again. In order to make amends he should start with an open letter apology to Patti & Faye and have it printed all the papers in New York. He could then do a huge sit down interview and explain himself. He is however a coward and I will never see him admitting that he "Wronged this Women".

Yes paid settlements but both of these women still deserve an apology.

Its funny that after all these years he hasn't had a New Show become major hit on Broadway "Karma"

If you give me $16 million I will produce it and get a STAR in the lead. :)

I would absolutely love to see a full scale major revival as I truly love this show, but Catherine Zeta Jones is a hack and would be a horrible choice for Norma Desmond. Just my opinion.

The original production evidently cost $13 million in 1994, so I doubt $16 million would cover it today.

If it ever is revived it will look more like a John Doyle production than the full scale original. No one in their right mind will ever spend that much money on Sunset again.

Sunset Blvd Full Scale Revival Please

Catherine Zeta-Jones in a full scale production of Sunset Boulevard?! No offense, but Zeta-Jones could not even begin to sing the score. I don't see a full scale production ever happening unfortunately.

CZJ has the voice range of Glenn Close and star power that the full scale revival would need. My other choices Audra McDonald or Vanessa Williams.

Since we've been dreaming about Emma Thompson in Night Music, why not have her as Norma?

Audiences didn't avoid the show because Baron Andy done Patti and Faye wrong; they avoided it because it was third-rate writing.

Amen.

And for the record, I do not understand the delusions CZJ inspires. I have nothing against the woman: she's a trained dancer and can carry a tune. She may be the nicest woman on Earth. But She CANNOT sing a demanding (if mediocre) score for 3 hours!

I hardly think audiences stayed away because they thought the show was poorly written. If that were true then half of the musicals on Broadway right now wouldn't still be running.

Since somebody brought it up, if I have to sit through SUNSET BOULEVARD again, I'd rather see a scaled-back production. With the exception of the Paramount scenes, it's actually a rather small story with only four real characters.

I thought the palazzo got in the way of the story, especially once it floated in the air and was revealed to be plywood instead of marble.

(FTR, I am NOT suggesting the characters should play instruments, just that the story could benefit from some intimacy.)

If CZJ were to do it, how about Michael Douglas as Max?

The only cast that could do it would be Liza and Hugh J as Joe G.

A full scale revival is the only way to go. The show needs a STAR to get butts in the seats. I think I also think Andy screwed up by not making Karen Mason the star of the show after departure of Betty Buckley. Elaine Paige was almost a complete unknown outside of Broadway. Yes she was good but the show needed GREAT PRESS after years of bad publicity. When the show was in Los Angels Karen Mason filled in for Glenn Close and she was GREAT! She would of made a better choice to take over. It could been "A Star is Born" moment and the press would of loved this story. Yes Karen was already a busy working actress but she was not very well known. This would of been a great moment for her and the show but Andrew went with Elaine. Now she was a safer choice that ended up being the shows undoing....

Yeah, I'm sure if that big star Karen Mason had taken over, it would still be running today.

Hugh J is almost the same age now as Norma. He already performed the role when he was younger, that was enough.

Alice Ripley stated on that "other" Broadway site that she'd love to take a crack at "Norma" in a Sunset Boulevard revival.
