My guess is that they will eventually hire a standby for both the roles of Pippin and the Leading Player. I'd love to see Erik Altemus play the title role, but logistically, it doesn't really make sense for one principal cast member to be the first cover for another...

"does anyone know if she is back in tonight? i have tickets for saturdays matinee, and i hate to not see Patina"

Exactly. I think what some people don't realize on here is that A lot of people on this forum don't live in new york. We can't just go see a Broadway show every other month like some do on here. If i am ever in new york then its usually only once a year and i want to make it count and Not seeing Patina in her Tony winning role would deeply upset me. Of course I would get over it and still be excited for the show, But if Im only in new york once every year than i think i am entitled to be upset if i didn't get to see someone like Patina in pippin or Idina Menzel in wicked or ALice ripley in N2N.

Yeah, it's disappointing, but sometimes there's nothing you can do. Maybe you're seeing the next Patina Miller before she gets her break.

Signora Naccarelli was the understudy and alternate for Margaret in The Light in the Piazza. It happens all the time where a a smaller principal understudies the lead.

Off-topic, but someone asked a while back... In Xanadu, Andre Ward was an understudy for Mary Testa, Jackie Hoffman, AND Cheyenne Jackson.

"Wouldn't you be heartbroken if Alice Ripley was out of next to normal the day you saw it? "

No. Nor would I be "deeply upset". I am heartbroken to hear of Roy Miller's death at such a young age. I am deeply upset about the fact that our city is planning to put in a very dangerous gasline along the West side.

Missing Alice Ripley (or Patina) in a performance merits disappointment and annoyance, but if it creates heartbreak and deeply upsets you, then I think it's safe to assume you've never truly suffered heartbreak.

I would be more concerned about the performer and their health, especially in this case. It probably is simply a case of overwork, but no actor wants to miss performances, especially when now is the time the Tony voters come a-callin'.

Is it safe to say one would be "crestfallen"?

I probably should have picked a better word instead of heartbreak. I think you may be over thinking this. Probably My fault.

Okay lets try this again: I would be highly disappointed but like i already said in the previous post: I would get over it and still enjoy the show.

I imagine one of the reasons Stephanie Pope agreed to return to the ensemble was the gig as Leading Player U/S. Based on an article I read about Ms. Pope, she had her reservations about going back to the chorus after graduating to leading roles. Considering this, I doubt they will get a standby for Patina. I'm guessing ditto for Erik Altemus.

Lainie Kazan was Barbra Streisand's understudy for Funny Girl.
Emily Skinner was Linda Eder's in Jekyll and Hyde.
Laura Benanti was Rebecca Luker's in The Sound of Music.

It can be annoying to see an understudy when you wanted to see the original, but you never know if the understudy you see could be a future Broadway star or Tony winner.

Hey Mr. Music -- It does happen, but I wouldn't say it happens all the time. I suspect in the case of THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, being the cover for Margaret was the incentive for getting (Tony Award nominee) Patti Cohenour to agree to appear in a small supporting role in the production.

I still think you'll be seeing Pippin/Leading Player standbys hired with Pope and Altemus remaining as understudies. Again standbys are often not hired until after a production is open. Same situation happened with the leads in ONCE.

"I doubt they will get a standby for Patina. I'm guessing ditto for Erik Altemus."

Isn't that highly unwise? Especially with Patina's type of role.

Wasn't Paris Remillard the understudy for Claude in Hair and he moved up to lead from chorus?

Oh and don't forget that Nomi took over for Crystal Conners in Goddess!

I'm just figuring that part of the deal was the Stephanie got to go on for Patina in exchange for taking an ensemble part. Just a guess (based on this article I read: http://www.matermea.com/#/stephanie/4568766650)

would I have been disappointed to not see Patina? Yes, but show's have understudies for a reason. Miller was clearly undecided if she should perform that night, hence the hour notice for Pope. I'm hoping it's simply fatigue to Miller, and that she'll be back in the show tonight.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Patina is just coming down from the possibly best/most exhausting week of her entire life. I can understand why she was out; she had tweeted she wasn’t feeling 100% before Wednesday’s evening show.

And I don’t know if Stephanie not doing any of Patina’s tricks is a result of lack of rehearsal or lack of skill, but if it’s lack of skill (Though I doubt this. If she couldn’t do the tricks, why would they hire her?), then Molly Tynes might have the upper hand here, since she does so many circus tricks in the show already. She’s the one who does the bit with Matthew at the top of ‘With You’ with the suspended hula-hoop. I would love to see her as the Leading Player.
As for Erik, I love him. He’s a wonderful, funny and by far the best Lewis I have ever seen. But, IMO, he doesn’t have the same youthful and pop-like look that Matthew does. I would also be sad (not unbelievably, but still sad) if I didn’t see Matthew.

Also. Who's idea was it to have the Tony Junket/Nominee Lunch on the same day where half the nominees have a two-show day?!?
