Apparently that's not the whole thing, the beginning of it is missing. Someone on tumblr reported quite a few of the missing parts and one is the hair-cutting scene.

Anne's singing is heartbreaking and full of anguish - I can almost hear the tears while she sings of her lost dreams!

I like the idea of how this song is being used in the film version. It's very symbolic. I can't wait to see the completed version...there's no way to get a clear picture (no pun intended) on the director's intention or vision for this sequence from the clips that are being linked.

Here's what's missing from the trailer, apparently:

"Little Cosette with her bucket singing the lalalalala bit from Castle On A Cloud, I think maybe to reassure herself when she’s going down to fetch the water because she looked scared and Valjean wasn’t there.

Valjean and the other prisoners in the galleys.

Valjean being turned away from what I think was the prison at Digne, the guard said something like “I know who you are, you’re Jean Valjean” (in response to which I had an extra fangirl moment…) and slammed the shutter thingy shut.

Valjean in a church.

Fantine having her hair cut off.

Fantine possibly being arrested though it seemed to be happening in the factory so maybe it was her getting fired idk… possibly while Javert looked down through a window and Valjean looked up and saw him there though that might have been a different scene.

Fantine being pushed out a door and some coins thrown after her.

Javert in a grand hall kind of thing with two rows of men facing each other and forming a sort of passageway for him to walk down maybe… I’m not really sure what that part was…"

I don't like Anne Hathaway's singing in that clip at all.
I can hear she sounds damaged but the emotion only comes across if someone really knows how to put emotion in every word and knows how to sing. She sounds like she does not know how to make a real connection between her singing and her emotion. It sounds separated. Like an amateur.

Like the singing does not match the way she plays/acts emotions. As if it's only distracting for her as an actress, because she has to try so hard to get the notes out/sing in general, instead of enhancing the emotions through singing.

It sounds like it. She might think that "if I just cry it might justify the fact I can't sing and makes it sound emotional", but it's not. It only makes her singing look stupid and it makes me think "I wish she would have just spoken this scene as it would have been much more effective and emotional". And that comes from a music fan that always says that singing enhances emotions. But only if done right.

Samantha Barks can do this and I think she will blow away both Anne hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.

^I partially agree with you, Dave, though I do appreciate that she didn't power belt her way through the last verse. There's something missing in her singing, like she knew she couldn't do justice with too much volume so she had to hold back. But this is a LQ clip with no real visuals, so I'll wait to see/hear the whole thing to see if the performance works with the vocals.

The reason people seem to be having this repsonse is that there's a certain disconnect (in my opinion, an essential one for film) between the performance and the song.

"I Dreamed A Dream" is a grandiose song, even among Les Miserable's score. It's as much an aria as it is a song- a vocal and dramatic showcase for the actress, in which she stops the show literally to sing of her feelings and situation. Here in the movie, it has been reinterpreted, as having her "singing to herself, simply alone" as she would on stage, the way HPB suggested, would seem insincere, stagey, due to the fact that nothing happens- it is an aria, not a show-moving, plot-advancing moment.

The simple question is, does the song work as a song in a movie musical, and not as an aria? Compare and contrast to other big solos in the show, in which typically the plot moves and large decisions are made, i.e. "Stars," "Who Am I?" "Bring Him Home."

I agree, but the same goes for big solo's like "stars" those big songs need a good singer to keep it interesting for the audience. I also wonder what people will think of "stars" in this film, a struggling singer is something very different than a voice artist that knows how to express emotions through singing.

If aria's like that are sung like Anne Hathaway's "I dreamed a dream", the audience is in for a long, annoying ride.

There's nobody more picky than me and I think that bit of "I Dreamed a Dream" was perfect. I don't know what else y'all want but power belting in a film will get tiring after a while in a film with lots of opportunities to do just that.

The comments on Hathaway sounding amateurish because she doesn't know how to make the blah blah emotions sincere is seriously far fetched and is likely the result of someone being upset she isn't singing it exactly like a certain frumpy, unibrowed one hit wonder. :P

I just don't like her fast vibrato--sounds like she doesn't have proper breath support or something.

No, it's exactly the same as that frumpy, unibrowed one hit wonder.
Not a real singer and missing the ability to interpret notes in a way that actually conveys emotions.
It actually takes a voice artist to do that.

If singing does not come naturally, like is doesn't for Anne Hathaway, it shows on screen. It's only distracting for her as an actress, because she has to try so hard to get the notes out/sing in general, instead of enhancing the emotions through singing.

It's basically the Emmy Rossum in Phantom film effect. She can cry all she wants but the audience won't feel it. We just see a girl struggling with the singing.

Imagine what someone like Sierra Boggess could have done with the role of Fantine. Amazing actress, amazing singer, now that would be a tear-jerking combination. She would sing from her soul, make the notes soar and actually combine the emotion with the singing. The dramatic-ness and the bittersweet sound of "crushed dreams", but yet, a hint of true beauty in the sound of her soaring notes, as a glimpse of the past.....
Goosebumps all over when I just think of it.....

Anyway, I guess we will have to settle for a non singer and pretend the singing is combined with the emotions and try to look past the struggling-singing.

Wow Dave, you sure did get a a whole lot more out of that poorly recorded bootleg than i did. To be able to judge a performance from a cellphone recorded video of a preview on someones computer in an office is a true talent. You should be a casting director.

I can confidently say Dave's claims are absolutely unfounded. You can dislike a voice all you want but to claim the woman isn't feeling what she's singing and it's therefore somehow disconnected is something designed to hit a gray area that is easy to fool the weakest minds on.

You can have reservations about her vibrato or general sound like others but keeping in mind the way cellphone audio is about 10 times worse than your standard compressed mp3, I'll reserve judgement on the quality of her vocals for later. But just from this alone, chick is feeling what she's singing and the inflection on her voice is heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. That's subjective but also realistic.

Well, all I know is some of the members of the audience at CinemaCon who watched it in person said her singing sounded fantastic, and some of them said they were moved to tears by it. They seemed to think she was plenty connected to the song. I didn't see any complaints.

That makes me think it'll come across just fine in the film.

Umm, I just listened to it again. Twice. I cannot say that it is an Oscar-winning performance, but it sounded pretty good to me. Well sung, at least. We didn't even see more than five seconds of her singing, and what did we get, a 30-second snippet of audio? It only raised my hopes higher, if possible. I'm pumped.

Based on what I have read on a a few film blogs, the song was very effective at the conference in Las Vegas. I have little doubt that it well go over quite well when we see the finished product on the big screen.

"to claim the woman isn't feeling what she's singing and it's therefore somehow disconnected"

The disconnect is in the fact that I see a girl struggling with the singing, and that keeps me away from the emotions.

I'm sure she is feeling it and she feels like crying etc, but that does not make the singing performance acceptable or believable.
It's the other way around. For roles like this, the ability to handle your voice so well that you can actually convey emotions with the placements of the notes, soaring of the notes, etc, is very important. It is just nonsense to sing a ballad like this in a film and thinking you get away with someone that can't really sing.
Then just don't sing. The audience is not crazy, they see a woman struggling with singing. And that keeps the emotion away for me.

Again, you got ALL THIS from a sub-par, 15th generation recording of a trailer captured on a cellular phone from someone's pc.

WOW! You're extremely gifted.

Not at all, he got this from his preconceived notions regarding Hathaway's singing abilities. I happen to disagree with him, but I'm certain he is not going to be convinced otherwise, so I won't bother.

I would say someone is extremely disabled if he can't tell the difference between the quality of someone's ability to handle their singing voice and the quality of a recording....

Can you please explain what those 2 things have to do with eachother?

If I couldn't hear her good enough I couldn't have this opinion, could I?
I have heard much worse recordings in my life and was still perfectly able to tell what the ability of a singer is.

There is also the problem of judging someone performance on a very low quality video of a particle video of a rough TRAILER.

Get over yourself. After you have seen the film feel free to bash away.

But, until then, just shut up.

If Hathaway wanted to sing the song full tilt (and we don't really know how she sounds on the rest of the track), belting and holding notes, she's certainly capable of doing it that way. She's far from the most incredible singer ever, but she does have experience singing live from the Encores production of Carnival and several other performances.

There's not much filming left. "Barricade boys" have tweeted that this is their last week and they are "feeding Javert", doing "Drink with Me", "Bring Him Home", fighting and dying.

Extras have reported that they are going to be wedding guests in scenes next week. Helena Bonham-Carter said she hasn't started filming yet, so I think next week is the rest of the Valjean/Cosette/Marius stuff, then the Thenardier stuff, then they are done. My guess is right around the Tony Awards.
