Going to be in New York for 2 weeks and hoping to catch a couple of shows (musicals).

We've already decided on The Addams Family and were hoping for The Book Of Mormon (but after the crazy ticket sales, we've had to let that one go).

So now we are trying to decide between Spider-Man and How To Succeed (or any other suggestions).

We know Spider-Man apparently sucks but odds are, it will never open up here in London, so we are interested to watch it. Don't know much about How To Succeed apart from that it has Harry Potter and the Tony awards performance looked quite good.

So, what shall it be? Or any other suggestions.

If you're down July 7-9 (as I am), cross "how to Succeed" off your list...performance those days have been cancelled so Daniel Radcliffe can do promotion for Harry Potter.

If you're there earlier that week, I'd recommend it. Saw it in April and found most of it, after a slow start, very enjoyable.

Seeing "The Normal Heart" by hook or by crook when I'm down...Telecharge is out of commission at the moment...wanted to check the rear mezz seats for those days.

I'd defintely choose adding something because if all you see is Spiderman & The Addams Family you're not exactly aiming very high for quality of time spent! Not sure what's in London you may have seen already, so Anything Goes is about all I can suggest.

I know you said you were interested in musicals, but would you consider plays & "performance" pieces? Would you consider off-Broadway? I always recommend Blue Man Group to people visiting NY. We also have Cirque du Soleil here, even though it's at the Devil's Palace, a.k.a. Radio City Music Hall. Haven't seen this one, but I love their stuff.

Saw Cirque's "ZARKANA" last week at Radio City. If you are a big Cirque fan, see it. But I would suggest skipping it and do Broadway shows. Not one of their best.

If you want to see "Book of Mormon" take a day and do standing room. I thought the show was a bit overrated but it is worth the standing room price.

How to Succeed with Daniel Radcliffe (I didn't know Harry Potter was in the show!) was very good and if the show is up when you are here, it is worth seeing.

If you want to try out something new, "Death Takes a Holiday" is at the Laura Pels theater. I plan to see it this week.

I say definetly see Spiderman" It isn't the greatest but see it...just because! The sets and visuals are pretty spectacular.

Do you have enough time to see Mamma Mia 16 times?

Do check out the Merry Murderesses and Men of "Chicago". from A Chicago Fan in Austin, Texas

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

In order:

1) Sleep No More
2) Jerusalem
3) The Normal Heart
4) Not Spider-Man
5) Sleep No More (again)

Not sure when you will be in the city, but if you want to see Sleep No More, I would recommend getting tickets ASAP. I very very highly recommend it. It's different from everything else you'll see here or anywhere. If money isn't an issue than you'll be able to see a Broadway show like The Normal Heart and then Sleep No More has late night shows that start at 11 PM. If you like sitting down thought, i'd go with Jerusalem or The Normal Heart.

I second some of iK Bennett's choices:
THE NORMAL HEART (not a musical, but obligatory theatergoing)
ANYTHING GOES
HOW TO SUCCEED...

Spider-Man sucks?

And you haven't seen it yet.

I have yet to see Anything Goes and Catch Me If You Can.

Both suck badly. Don't see them.

Oh, and I haven't seen Book Of Mormon either, but no way. Its horrible.

The Normal Heart is a MUST SEE. It will stir you, it will challenge you, it will anger you, it will move you, it will make you think about it long after the curtain has fallen.

Whats more you will never forget it. "The Normal Heart" is everything theatre should be.

I just got back from a trip to NYC and we saw quite a few shows while we were there. I would definitely recommend trying to lotto/cancellation line/SRO 'The Book of Mormon' if at ALL possible. I didn't know what to expect of the show when I went in, and I absolutely cannot stop raving about it. I also enjoyed 'Catch Me If You Can' (though my companion wasn't crazy about it). 'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying' was SO much fun; we both enjoyed it very, very much. And not because it was ~Daniel Radcliffe~. But as a whole, the production was very good and enjoyable. I, personally, didn't enjoy 'Priscilla' near as much as my companion. I don't know, I feel like I kind of missed a lot of the jokes, but that's just me. (We also saw 'Rain', and it was a fun time too). We had no interest at all in 'Anything Goes' or 'Sister Act', but I know a lot of people are enjoying those. 'Addams Family' and 'Spiderman' are passes for me; I've seen Addams Family and it wasn't anything special. 'Baby, It's You' I've heard isn't very good, but that's just hearsay.

Just back from seeing 5 shows in New York. Our opinions (if it helps you out) were:

Addams Family - All four of us agreed it was very disappointing. No very memorable songs and there didn't seem any point to the whole story. Wouldn't really recommend this if you haven't got tickets already.

Memphis - Would definitely recommend it - Excellent, one of my top musicals of all time. Have been raving about it and my other half came out of the theatre and wished he had time to go see it again that week.

Catch Me if You can - 3 of us thought it was a good show - entertaining but not fantastic, my husband thought it was boring and not great. So, jury is still out on this one!

How 2 Succeed - Much better than I expected. Made me laugh a lot and it had a few excellent, stand out songs (although some duller moments too)

Spiderman - Had very low expectations of this and it took a little while to get used to the style of music but we all agreed it was actually very good and we would probably go see it again after listening to the songs a few times. Visually stunning (not just the flying) and less boring that people make out! Would recommend it - if only to say you have seen it too!

I would also say that if you don't get to see something you want and a slot opens, see "Sister Act". I really had a good time at this show. Enjoyed the music and the nuns sing their butts off. The sets are really cool also. Not a huge Patina Miller fan but all in all it is a fun show that will leave you with a smile on your face.
