“The Book of Mormon” achieves something like a miracle. It both makes fun of and ardently embraces the all-American art form of the inspirational book musical. No Broadway show has so successfully had it both ways since Mel Brooks adapted his film “The Producers” for the stage a decade ago."
Didn't see it last night as this weekend is when a lot of shows changed their schedules to Tue to Sun. Going tonight and am now very excited about seeing it. I knew very little about it until I got here and everyone is talking about nothing else!
Walking around yesterday I saw a very rare thing on Broadway - a line at the actual theatre box office. Only two shows had this, 'How To Succeed' and 'Mormon'. Its years, as you said 'The Producers', since I saw that! Must have been a good 100 or so in each line! Updated On: 3/29/11 at 08:43 AM
I am glad it is niot just me who felt the buzz for 'Mormon', this is a buzz I have never felt before in New York and it is amazing.
I really enjoyed 'How to Succeed' as well and see from grosses it is playing packed houses, I guess everyone is going for 'Anderson Copper'.
Tw of the best shows i saw in New York last week, also the only two shows I paid full price for and I do not begrudge paying that, as both shows are worth it.
Despite the raves, the more I read about the show, the more glad I am I did not go to see it last week! It really does seem to be the kind of vulgar schoolboy humour I detest - and making fun of the heartbreaking human tragedy of AIDS in Africa is thoroughly reprehensible, however they try to package it. (I know I have not seen the show so cannot totally condemn it but I read a line of lyrics quoted in one of the reviews and hailed as being hilarious which I thought was way beyond being seriously offensive.)

Thats how I felt Bob and as I said i laughed very little during the performance. Its another hyped up Broadway show that will get a decent run that it frankly doesn't deserve.
