I remember seeing a video on the [tos] cast doing this great number they had written for BCEFA but I can't find it anywhere online. BCEFA took it off their website and everything. It was a really great song...

It's on Susan Blackwell's website. www.susanblackwell.com I believe it's under the Writer tab.

Better catch that while you can. I'm pretty sure she doesn't have the rights to the video, and it could get yanked from her site. If you want to own a copy, the entire show is available through Broadway Beat, and proceeds go to the good cause that is BC/EFA. I think it's Gypsy of the 2008. They also did a version of this on Rosie's Alaskan cruise, and another version might be on her website.

How can she not have the rights? She wrote it.

I know you could say they probably donated the work to BCEFA but I know they've performed it elsewhere since the Gypsy of the Year.

There are many, many reasons why she may not have permission to have that video on her website. To begin with, she wasn't the sole author of the piece. Also, it isn't unheard-of for a composer, for whatever reason, to not own the rights to their work (Paul McCartney being a classic example). It this case, even if she did have the sole ownership of the work itself (very doubtful), she doesn't necessarily (and probably doesn't) own the right to that particular video of the performance.

"I know they've performed it elsewhere since the Gypsy of the Year"

*sigh* I know that. I said so in my post. There's a difference between having the rights to perform a song you wrote (in this case really a kind of mini-musical) and having the right to show a video of that performance. She did not, after all, make or cause to have made the video. Someone else did, and they have the rights to it. She might have permission to show it, but I doubt it. The fact that the video is no longer up on the [title of show] website strongly indicates that. I could be wrong, but I thought you should know the possibility that it could be pulled from her website existed. Believe me or don't.

Okay, thanks so much for the information. I get really confused, it's one of those endearing attributes young people like me hope to grow out of. I'll enjoy it while I can. :)

She has permission to have the video on her website. Also, the video was never on the [title of show] website, so that means nothing.

But yes, she does have permission to have the video on her website.

That is endearing, Boq, and I'm glad doubleentendre was able to point you in the right direction. "My First Time" is a very touching piece of theater.

I'm glad to hear that Susan has permission, for her sake, doubleentendre, but in any case, I wasn't judging but rather making an observation. I condemn the judicious usage of copywritten material or bootlegs about as much as the [tos] gang, which is to say, not at all, really. I did find it a little odd that it would be on Susan's site but when it no longer was on [tos]'s. For what it's worth, it certainly was on [tos]s site - or at least a link to it, now dead, still is, under the Gypsy of the Year Dec 24 entry.

Thanks for the info.

Yes, it was in the blog as a link to the BCEFA website, which when they pulled down the video to put different ones up, the link became invalid. Doesn't mean anything. It was never linked to "officially" on the main site, just in a blog Hunter posted about it.

I know the person who does her website, and they waited a long time to launch the website because they were making sure they had permission for every single thing on it (even some photos used in the galleries that were people's photos on Facebook) to ensure that nothing would be taken down.

The video'll be there for a while yet :)

Honest to God I know the difference between having a video linked to a website and having a video officially on the website, doubleentendre. I hope you can get that it is understandable why I cautioned Boq, given that "My First Time" is more of a [tos] thing than a Susan thing, and that it was no longer available, by whatever means, on their website might raise flags? I mean, if they could get permission to post it there, why wouldn't they? They've always been almost obsessively pro-active with their self-promotion.

I wasn't suggesting any wrong-doing. I even said that I might be wrong. Jeez - no good deed goes unpunished Hey does anyone remember 'My First Time' from [title of show]?

Your friend did a great job, btw.

Hey, does anyone remember when [tos] was such a hit that it was going to have a brand new revival in the same year? Me too!
