This isn't one of those COMPLETELY clueless threads, but I've only seen one show "on Broadway" before (namely The Little Mermaid), and it looks like I might be able to see a matinee show on October 2.

I was thinking of seeing A Little Night Music, since I love that show, and I'm sure I'll never get the chance to see the lovely Bernadette Peters live again. Is it likely that'll still be open on October 2? I know they have a Saturday matinee at 2.

Part of me is also curious about the Addams Family musical-- I've read the reviews, and they are dismal at best, and I'd normally never bother... but I am an enormous fan of Terrence Mann and I'd probably kill to get to see him live (getting his autograph would be absolutely incredible, too!) Bebe Neuwirth will be on vacation Oct 2, but that doesn't bother me-- that said, how bad IS the show?

I also know absolutely nothing about new shows opening before then, and very little about plays, so any input would be fabulous>

I think you should try to see A Little Night Music...if you're a Bernadette fan, and you think you might not get another oppurtunity to see her, I don't think you'll want to miss out.

But, I can also reccommend my favorite show currently on Broadway - Next To Normal (simply beautiful and incredible in my opinion). Tickets can be really cheap, and there's almost always discounts online..if that helps at all.

I second Next to Normal, but if you're choosing between Night Music and Addam's Family, definitely see Night Music. I saw both and Addam's was truly unfortunate.

I'll second Next to Normal, and also add La Cage to my list of suggestions.

But if you're choosing between Night Music and Addams, I'd say Night Music. I had a good time at Addams Family, but the show is really kind of terrible, which is unfortunate given the talent level of the cast.

Schmergy, I feel like I haven't seen your name in a post in forever!

I would say Night Music, if you're a Peters fan.

I don't know if they'd have a matinee that day, but Women on the Verge has it's first preview that day, so if I were in the city that day, I'd be very interested to check that out.

Definitely A Little Night Music. Seeing Bernadette Peters live would be a great opportunity and as you said, this will probably be your only chance to see her live.

Ooh, now I really hope ALNM is open then! Thanks so much for the recommendations, guys. I'm not a HUGE Bernadette Peters fan, but I was so excited when I saw she was filling the role of Desiree.

The reason why I wasn't thinking of Next to Normal is that I'm going to see it when it comes around to DC on tour! I do have the cast recording, and I'm ticked off that I missed it when it had try-outs in DC with the original cast.

ALNM and TAF are both great. I actually really liked the Addams Family. I know this is not much help, but it's really your choice when it comes down to the two since they are both really good.

You should definitely try and see NIGHT MUSIC. Not only would you get to see Bernadette, but you would get to see Elaine Stritch in what very well may be her last endeavor on Broadway. Why would you pass that up to see ADDAMS, which got pretty unanimously panned?

On October 7, The Scottsboro Boys will begin previews. John Kander and Fred Ebb's last musical should be exciting to see on Broadway. The sold out, off-broadway production at the Vineyard was so memorable. I can't recall a show in recent years that moved me so much. I wouldn't be surprised if it wins the Pulitzer. Go see it. Peformances will be at the Lyceum Theater.

I vote for:

NEXT TO NORMAL (a truly moving production that has a great book and score)

ROCK OF AGES (a truly fun show if you are a fan of 80s music and don't mind drunk theater patrons)

LA CAGE AUX FOLLES (Douglas Hodge and Kelsey Grammer are truly amazing and hilarious in this magnificent revival)
