Rebecca Caine
Judy Kuhn
Lea Salonga (IS she a mezzo?)
Claire Moore
Patti Cohenour
Rachel Barrell
Kristin Chenoweth
Audra McDonald

Not quite ten.

Am I the only person in the world who does not like Sarah Brightman's voice? It just sounds strange to me.

I also wanna say that Claire Moore was the very first Christine alternate for Sarah Brightman, in the West End production of Phantom. :)

"Am I the only person in the world who does not like Sarah Brightman's voice? It just sounds strange to me"

No, a lot of people, especially on this board would agree with you.

And I think that Lea Salonga is a mezzo, although she hits very high notes, her voice is more comfortable on a lower range. So she is a mezzo I am almost certain.

You know, it all comes down to personal taste. Brightman sounds a lot different now than she sounded during her Phantom years, her voice is a lot smoother now, but she still hits the high E. Not every time, but most times.
Like you don't like Sarah's voice, I can barely stand Audra's voice and Kristin Chenoweth's speaking voice and belting voice. The only time I enjoy Cheno is when she sings with her head voice.

Yeah, Sarah does sound quite a bit different. I do like her current voice much more than her Phantom-age voice. I can't stand the Phantom OLCR, but I don't mind listening to Sarah's newer stuff.

I'd say they're my favs... and for the record I do not like Sarah Brightman.. I just think her voice sounds to warped in the mouth.. Also the sopranos I listed are my favorite Sopranos.. aka not mezzos.

For some reason, I've never been able to stand Sarah Brightman. Something about the way she pronounces words. But I agree, I like her a lot more now than I did when she was younger.

To Sarah Brightman haters: Listen to Bernadette's "Unexpected Song" and then listen to Sarah's .... Sarah's got a fantastic voice, of course depending on the song.

- Kelli O'Hara
- Audra McDonald
- Judy Kuhn
- Kristin Chenoweth
- Christine Ebersole
- Victoria Clark
- Renee Fleming
- Magdalena Kozena
- Cecilia Bartoli

So the last three aren't sopranos who've been on Broadway, but still amazing enough to be listed. :)

"You have two kinds of shows on Broadway – revivals and the same kind of musicals over and over again, all spectacles. You get your tickets for The Lion King a year in advance, and essentially a family... pass on to their children the idea that that's what the theater is – a spectacular musical you see once a year, a stage version of a movie. It has nothing to do with theater at all. It has to do with seeing what is familiar.... I don't think the theatre will die per se, but it's never going to be what it was.... It's a tourist attraction." Stephen Sondheim

Select a Member Name, I LOVE Magdalena Kozena! I saw her in Cosi Fan Tutte at the Met a few years ago and she totally stole the show! I didn't realize anyone else knew who she was re: Top 10 Favorite Sopranos?

Well, if it makes you feel any better, it was just the final dress rehearsal. And I've never gotten to see her since.
PS: She's actually a mezzo, but would be classified as a soprano by MT standards re: Top 10 Favorite Sopranos?

bwaylvsong, you still got to see her!
And yes, I know she's a mezzo by opera standards, but it doesn't even matter what she is, because that woman is just crazy-talented.

For me, all others pale in comparison to Barbara Cook.

Maureen is a mezzo? I'd say she is an alto? I don't remember her very well, but her voice was on the lower side in Little Women.

Honestly, I don't know why the mezzo/soprano distinction even exists in MT. You have Ruthie Henshall playing soprano roles, Kelli O'Hara playing belting roles, etc etc.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!
