April, I think you're exactly right.
But I don't think it's odd at all that Patti would be upset by one and not by the other. Someone taking photographs is distracting. But if you know it's for a reason--eg. a magazine article--and you're prepared for it, then, well, you're prepared for it.
I haven't weighed in on this yet because I can sort of see both sides. The usual Patti haters had their usual reaction (and seem to have given Glenn Close a pass for doing a similar thing); the Patti worshippers see it as either her having high standards or just something to add to the legend (or both).
I think two things: those who carry on about the sacrilege of breaking the fourth wall seem a little hysterical to me. It's not as though she stopped performing open heart surgery. She was putting on a show. That being said, she may well have felt (and I believe this to be the case) that in fact she WASN'T able to give their money's worth to those paying customers that everyone keeps screaming about. She also may have figured that those audience members in the vicinity of the guy taking the photos were already yanked out of the "reality" of the scene.
Bottom line for me: if you were actually there, and you genuinely felt cheated somehow, then that's valid. But I don't think I've heard any of the actual survivors of the incident say that.

Schmerg, although I actually think Patti is really pretty, I do think she looks lovely as Rose. I think she wears costumes well, and I think the wig was incredibly flattering, in terms of color and those pretty curlies.
and yes, her husband is among the silver fox ranks of Joe Biden and Jon Stewart.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

Posted: 1/26/09 at 10:58amSometimes Patti looks stunning , such as at the Tony awards but I have to give her props for being photographed just after waking , I find it hard to even look at myself in the mirror when I get up. Her husband is very attractive , they look adorable together. Great to see a couple so in love and affectionate after 20 years.

I pm'd this story to some folks, but now that it's come up here,
At the stage door during our New Year's trip, Patti's husband Matt came out and was standing by the limo door. When he turned around and smiled, I said to him "you must be really proud of her". He said he was so proud of her and that in just another week she would be all his again.
I think it's great to see a couple like that.

Posted: 1/26/09 at 3:09pmAs one who was of the impression that the incident surrounded a NY magazine photographer, I am now convinced that story is untrue. If the photo journalist was there to cover Patti's last show a. the pictures would not have been taken the previous evening (we hope) and b. Patti would have been fully aware the photographer was still there. I stand corrected.

Not knowing much about her stopping the show or the situation of the photographer the day before... It does appear that these pictures could have been taken on more than one night or at multiple performances. This is often the case with video and photo shoots. It is a chronical of "a day" but it seems very unlikely they would let the photographer go from backstage and out into the audience at the same show. I would think this would be disruptive to the audience. He has some resting shots (backstage) and then performance shots shortly after (from out front), and multiple shots during curtain call - both from the stage and from the audience.
Great shots though!

I'm sure someone has posted this before (and I can't imagine someone hasn't):
Unless someone steps forward and identifies himself/herself as the ejected photographer with solid evidence that they were working for New York (or any) magazine, the 'Patti flipped out because she forgot there was someone out there' story is bullshytte.
