So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?

there's lots of loud rock music and some blue language. I think it's fine for all ages (except young kids).
(oh, and simulated drug use)

I've seen plenty of older people (older than me - 50's) LOVIN' the show. It actually has quite a "Wizard of OZ" theme...there's no place like home, there's no place like........

that's true (about Wizard of Oz). It also has a lot in common with Sunday in the Park with George, in regards to art and life and relationships and how they interweave and are often at odds. the way the show dealt with identity really had an impact on me. and Stew and co. managed to bring deep meaning to these themes without getting too sentimental or trite, and balancing it out with uproarious satire. it's a really really well-done show. An instant classic, as far as I'm concerned. :P

So I went to the matinee today (my second time seeing the show) and got front row $25 seats two hours before curtain.
The house was pretty darn packed and the audience was amazing... totally into it. The cast was so grateful for how full and energetic we were and it was definitely the best Wednesday matinee audience I've been a part of.
Keep the word of mouth going... cuz it's working!

I have to say, I am pretty hesitant about 'modern' musicals - I just can't get into the music. Jason Robert Brown is brilliant but it takes me such a long time to finally enjoy his music. But with Passing Strange... I don't know, I think they fully grabbed hold of theatre and didn't let it go while creating this "rock" show. Does anyone understand/follow? I couldn't figure out for so long what about this musical had drawn me in, and about 24 hours ago it came to me; I feel like this is another Hedwig for Broadway. It's just absolute genius and I am in love with the little I know about it and have heard/seen. Even though Stew may not care for traditional Broadway (which I adore), I still feel they didn't shy away from what makes great [traditional] theatre what it is. I just feel they took the modern spin of theatre these days and incorporated it into what is so important in true theatre pieces.
I feel like I am rambling nonsense, heh. But hopefully someone understands and/or agrees ? :)
