chenifan ~ Another vote for one of the Chinatown buses. I use Eastern Shuttle. $35 round trip. That's who I'll be using when I go down on April 11 for the Alice Ripley/Emily Skinner concert. :)

LIVE THAT LESSON!!!!!!
There are numerous discount buses from NYC to DC, with roundtrip fare around $40. There are a few Chinatown buses -- I tend to use Apex, although it seems tickets are interchangeable between some of the Chinatown lines. The Chinatown bus is good if you want to use the metro to VA.
There's the fairly new DC2NY bus line, which markets itself as the "upscale" bus. This drops off at McPhereson square in downtown DC, also convenient to the metro.
There's the Washington Deluxe bus, which also drops off at McPhereson square.
Lastly there's the Vamoose bus, which drops off in Rosslyn, VA(part of Arlington close to DC). This would also be convenient for using the metro or just catching a cab directly to the theater.
I would not recommend taking Greyhound, as the station is in a terrible part of town and nowhere near a metro station. At least, not close enough so as I'd feel comfortable walking. I've taken a cab the few times I've used Greyhound.
