Oh, Mikey, you know how much I love you!!! You are right on everything (except, I DO think RENT is the end-all, be-all show sent from the Musical Theatre gods...so there! =P lol)

Honestly, i'd be PISSED if RENT didn't end the way it does. The RENT Bible has Jonathan explaining why he has the ending the way it is, and I agree with him. The ending doesn't mean Mimi is going to live forever. She could have died the next day for all we know, because most of the actresses i've seen don't make the ending seem like Mimi is totally cured (but I agree it's annoying when some actresses choose to be TOO bubbly and alive at the end) But the point is, Mimi has THAT much more time with Roger, and every second counts. Ok, talking about RENT always makes me babble but i'll stop now =)

About Once on This Island: I LOVE that ending!! I was bawling, but then, I was just smiling at the very end (I won't spoil the show) but I was very satisfied with the way it ended. Oh well.

At the intermission of POTO I was a bit confused but thought it was a good show....then at the end I thought it was a wonderful show- I just didn't understand the ending at all.

There was a thread like this a few months ago, about the ending of Rent. I hadn't seen the show at the time, but I don't quite agree. When Mimi "comes back to life", I didn't view it as "she's gonna live". I felt like death was still inevitable, it just wasn't gonna be today. "Thank God this moment's not our last." And when Roger is singing, he asks for one more day. It's just a blessing that God, or Angel has given them. Just my thoughts.

rent pissed me off.

Mimi doesn't count. You have to have something called PERSPECTIVE and she has none when speaking about Rent.

Wicked's copout ending, totally. It perturbed me so much. Couldn't that have killed someone?! That show could have used a good death.
Lanford Wilson's Burn This. Great play until it fizzles out at the end.
Dracula. Ok, it wasn't a good show, but it was bearable until the odd ending where I left thinking, "They just rewrote hundreds of year of vampire lore!!!"

Rent is about keeping hope alive against the odds. If Mimi and Angel both die, then what hope is there left for the others? Mimi's vision of Angel sums up the message of the entire show. Is there some reason everyone wants Mimi to die and the show to have absolutely no optimism whatsoever? Larson was an optimist. His death was ironic, but he lived life never giving up on his dream. It seems he wished to share that optimism and his death is an example of how precious every moment of our lives really are. So, I'm not sure why people are so pissed that Mimi didn't die.

PS - Mimi die not "come back to life". She loses consciousness, but there is nothing to indicate that she is dead at any point.

"If Mimi and Angel both die, then what hope is there left for the others?"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Roger and Collins both have AIDS and they are both alive, is that not hope, or do only Mimi and Angel count?

The fact that Mimi lived was just silly. If Larson really wanted to live, there could've been other ways to handle it by making slight changes in the plot beforehand and not using this cliche "I was in a tunnel headed for a warm, white light." It was really like a joke. Also, if Mimie had actually died, the show itself would have had to end on a depressing note. I think a clever writer could've come up with something. Look at Les Miserables' ending...the main character dies, but is the ending not triumphant and optimistic?

Anyway, my answer to the original question is Rent and Wicked.

The end of Rent sucks. Mimi should deffinately have died, of course the gay characetr with aids has to die, but when its a straight character she gets to come back from the dead.
