I think that it has potential as a stage musical ("Zero to Hero" would make an EXCELLENT Act Two Opener, and "I Won't Say (I'm In Love)" is also a great tune), but I think it would be foolish to take it straight to the Great White Way. It is one of the more obscure animated films in the Disney stable, and has a pretty small fandom compared to The Lion King and Frozen. Considering all the time, money and effort spent bringing megamusicals like this to life, applying this treatment to a cult favourite is a very big risk for a company as cautious as Disney. In addition,. Hercules will also be affected by comparisons to Aladdin. Both films had a similar tone and feel (They are comedic adventure stories centred on a male hero from ancient mythology, with big action sequences and anachronistic humour) but Aladdin is the more famous of the two. If Aladdin is still on Broadway when Hercules opens, the newer musical could undermine the older one. If Aladdin closes to make way for Hercules, then Hercules will be regarded as too much of a copy. Either way, Hercules is going to be overshadowed by its Tony-winning predecessor.

I think that Hercules would work best as a musical for regional and amateur theatre. If they want to take it to Broadway, Disney Theatrical should use the same strategy employed for Aladdin - they should give it a few tryouts and upgrade it to Broadway if it shows potential.

Pretty much agreed, except Zero to Hero would be, AND SHOULD BE, the Act 1 closer. Any huge song that buttons the way it does and shows a time-passage montage is your Act break. It fulfills basically two of the three requirements for an Act beak song, it would be awkward to open Act 2 with it.

These "next for Disney" threads alway seems to pop up, but I will always concur about Hercules.

Hamilfan-Really? That's actually kinda sad because that has a crap ton of Broadway potential, I don't want to see it go the way of Hunchback...

And I know in other threads people have said no one wants to see a Day of the Dead musical, but the more I watch Coco, the more I see its potential...now THAT is the musical that could get Taymor back into the theatre collective consciousness.

The chorus is integral to the score, and also makes it financially impossible for a Broadway run.

Beauty and the Beast revival shouldn’t be that far off, and Princess Bride and The Muppet Show keep getting kicked around.

As a huge Disney fan, after seeing the uninspired, cheap and bland route they took with Frozen, I kinda wish Disney don't put any musical out for some 10 years until they decide that spending money they'll earn back anyway isn't that bad.

Whatever they announce, I hope it's BIG, GRAND, with a huge ensemble, no projections, no screens. I want to see a Tony Award winner, not a glorified middle school production.
