When it comes to Elphaba's casting, it has to be an actor who cannot only sing, but sing the HECK outta the score. I high doubt that Jennifer Lawrence would suddenly be able to belt out No Good Deed. The same even goes for Anne Hathaway. As much as I dislike Lea Michelle's acting, the role would have to go to someone like her. A trained singer/belter who has acting abilities.
As for Ariana as Elphaba, here's some problems with that.
1) Ariana will look 17 for a few years. She hasn't really aged a day since she was in her early teens. For Glinda, that's great. Glinda is supposed to be the preppy blonde college girl with a flawless complexion. Elphaba (and I could be wrong) was supposed to look more mature.
2) Vocally speaking, even with a belt, Ariana has a lighter sounding voice. Her sound isn't as intense as I feel Elphaba's need to be. However, for Glinda, her voice is spot on. And even though she's not the best at comedy, I feel she'd have better success tackling Glinda than she would Elphaba.
As for her statement about not wanting to act much, I think there's several things behind that. For starters, she's only ever done TV shows aimed at 12 and under. As an artist wanting to expand her audience, appearing on Sam & Cat isn't going to help. I could be wrong, but being offered to play the lead role in one of the biggest and most awaited movie musicals in sometime is VERY different than being asked to renew a contract on Sam & Cat for another year. Wicked could help her massively in expanding her horizons and taking that next step she's needing right now. Sam & Cat will keep her from moving forward. Updated On: 6/28/14 at 01:09 PM
Give it to Samantha Barks. Problem solved. Or an unknown. Or someone from Broadway. The nice thing with WICKED is it will sell itself, it doesn't need a female celeb in the role.
@Starship - Yeah I agree with you. That's why currently I'm saying Lea (Elphaba) and Ariana (Glinda) would be good.
It's possible. Ariana may not want to do it right now or maybe her label wouldn't want her to but you can't speak for her and say she WON'T do it because that's just a false assumption
No I really don't. Back in 2009 the WICKED IMDB said the film would be coming out in 2012 starring Anne Hatheway and Mandy Moore. IMDB isn't reliable. The broadway musical shows no sign of slowing down and there are 2 tours out right now. Plus Disney just did an Oz film. No way in hell a producer would be dumb enough to bring WICKED into theatres right now. Maybe in 10 years.
"We're starting to do some work on it," Schwartz revealed. "We've actually started gearing up on it a little bit." "I don't know exactly how many years away it is," Schwartz said, but he did say that he's very optimistic about the movie adaptation and that his creative team are already thinking about what to consider in order to do so. "What are we going to change?" Schwartz said. "What are we going to keep? How do you use a whole new language and medium to tell the story? [We can] really look at it again and say, 'Oh, we can do this, and we've always wanted to do that and we couldn't onstage, but we can in a movie.' We're actually having a blast."
Yeah I think less than 10 but more than 4/5 years away

I definitely think it will happen in the next 4-5 years, as why it's really hard to start thinking of actors/actresses in the role. New actors could pop up in that amount of time. I mean, only recently did Ariana Grande, Jennifer Lawrence, etc. really show up in the spotlight. There's still a lot of time.
I watched the vid of Lea Michele singing "For Good" with Kristin at the Hollywood Bowl, and I was beyond disappointed. She sounded pretty terrible on it, struggling with pitch and clashing with Kristin - I know that's just a one-off performance, but it wasn't pleasant. Her "Defying Gravity" from that cabaret type concert several years, pre-Glee, was much more promising.
Also Lea as Glinda and Ariana as Elphaba seems backwards.
I LOVE Jennifer Lawrence, but I can't envision her as Elphaba at all. I do think they need to pull in someone from musical theater that can sing and act, and do both extremely well.
I just watched a clip of Ariana ( cause I've never even heard of her) and I really don't think her voice would fit the Wicked score. It's not powerful enough. Plus, her acting is..... well..yeah.
She used her old school Broadway voice (30's) for that segment. If you really want to see the comparisons, take a listen to her songs "The Way" or "Baby I". If you really want to see the comparisons, just look up her Emotions cover.
@Starship Beat me to it.

Either way, she was invited to perform for the President along with Patti LaBelle and Aretha Franklin. I don't care about the film, but saying her voice isn't powerful enough is something else.
