Agree with most on here that lightning doesn’t strike twice. If they want to write another musical I wish they would have thought up a new idea. This one will be compared to BOM even more than a second musical by them of different plot structure and, with how insane the hype got for BOM, it will be nearly impossible to live up to.

I am all over this like white on rice! It's what they do best and better than anyone. And I very much doubt that Cruise will be a character. They don't need him to make the satiric point. And as for lightening striking twice, it struck many more times than that for the likes of R&H, Lerner & Loewe, The Gershwins, R&Hart, Comden & Green, et al.

Tom Cruise will be protesting outside the theatre.

On I think they could easily produce a second grand slam.

Their humor is what it is. BOM had a classic Parker/Stone sensibility and people responded to it in a big way.

And the Hangover cast.

???
The second Hangover made more money than the first and launched most of the cast into household names.

You are also forgetting about Cannibal! the Musical and Orgazmo.

I'm almost positive that if they do this they'll include a character as a tribute to Issac Hayes, similar to his South Park character.

Considering this isn't being reported anywhere else and it seems like it's very early in development, I think it's a bit soon to start fretting.

Orgazmo isn't a musical but Trey and Matt's band DVDA did some of the music. BASEketball they only acted in so it's not really considered one of their films. Cannibal! is great and I would highly recommend it...if you like their humor.

I agree that lighting doesn't strike twice. When will people learn that if you have one success on Broadway you can never, ever have another?

At least in my case, when I agreed with the “lightning doesn’t strike twice,” I was referring to creating a musical that is the same outline as the first. I absolutely think that Parker & Stone could continue to do well in musical theatre, but I think that following up such a monster hit as BOM with a musical that is the same guideline, just a different religion, is risky.

Well, sure, although there's no indication that it's the same outline, is there? Particularly since, at its core, Book of Mormon seems to find some affection for Mormonism that I doubt they're going to find for Scientology.

Considering that the linked article boils down to, "Parker and Stone are working on a musical about Scientology and Tom Cruise isn't happy. Allegedly." I'm not sure what assumption can be made about its plot.

And as Phyllis noted, Parker and Stone, though mocking of Mormonism, ultimately are affectionate toward it. They've never depicted Scientology as anything more than a ludicrous, controlling cult.

I can't wait until they do a musical on Islam. Hmmm, what to call it? "The Book of Islam" ?
That one will probably be the last work we ever get out of the guys.

Obviously, I don’t think it will be exact same storyline. I suppose “outline” was not the best word to use. I meant that parodying a religion as the central idea is fairly specific for a musical.

Lightening doesn't strike twice. Ask Mel Brooks.

And that's not stopping him from possibly bringing BLAZING SADDLES to stages. He's "working on it."

But more importantly, Scientology has already had the musical treatment. Dust off your Sh-K-Boom albums, and you'll find a gem called A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant.

Is it going to be as tepid and witless as Book of Mormon?

One can only hope it scales such heights of tepidity and witlessness.

Words don't deserve that kind of malarkey. They're innocent, neutral, precise, standing for this, describing that, meaning the other, so if you look after them you can build bridges across incomprehension and chaos. But when they get their corners knocked off, they're no good anymore…I don't think writers are sacred, but words are. They deserve respect. If you get the right ones in the right order, you can nudge the world a little.

It certainly won't be as condescending and pedantic as After Eight.
