Interesting that there is a screening this weekend - there are casting notices out for filming for extras for this week... Not sure if that is for reshoots, additional scenes, or what.

I'm sure there are people who are upset at this, and I'm sure it'll only get stronger once the film gets closer to release. Honestly I can't say they are wrong to be angry or frustrated with the lack of rep for the kind of people who make up the bulk of the neighborhood and frequently get misrepresented or ignored in media. But these complaints aren't new, we've heard them all before about plenty of other things. Twitter was quite angry about Dr. Strange's whitewashing, yet the movie still did well. Crazy Rich Asians caught some flack for it's disregard of Singaporean culture, but as I recall still was critically acclaimed and made quite a bit of money. And yes, the 'backlash' will probably circulate around the kind of people who are interested in this topic. However I seriously don't think it's going to cause a huge dent in movie sales. The majority of people don't boycott a film for something like this, especially not one that's still bringing much-needed diversity to the table. It is a blockbuster made to appeal to a broad audience, and I'm sure it will do just that. Would it have been nice to see a few more Afro-Latino faces among the cast, yeah, but overall I think this will be a step in the right directions for Latinos overall and I think that will be the dominant narrative when it hits theaters this summer. Interested to see what the potential re-shoots might bring.

my twitter friend has seen a screening of the movie and she told me that it is incredible. she said that daphne rubin vega plays daniela perfectly. and she said that cuca played by dascha polanco is used mostly for comic relief. she doesn’t say much but she has some of carla’s lines and she sings a tiny bit too.

The screening this weekend wasn't as rough a cut as I thought it would be.  Impressive for a very early audience test screening.

Overall, the crowd loved it.  Big reactions.  Chu directed it well and used his usual bag of tricks to keep the story moving and visually interesting.

They still have B-roll and establishing shots to shoot and edit in.  You can tell when watching it.

Was that in industry only screening or Gofobo?

It was an industry invite (well, mine was at least).

Cuca (Polanco) was ancillary.  She was used as backup comedy, but nothing major.

Anthony Ramos is the breakout star here.  He's a young John Leguizamo.  Charismatic.  Handles the material like a pro and Chu occasionally allows the scene to linger just a little too long, but instead of Ramos looking awkward, it's honest and charming.

They still have some retooling to do to ensure the ending makes sense to an audience who has no background with the show.  Currently, there's a lot of hyperbole at play.  That won't play smoothly to audiences who need things spoon fed to them.  Sadly, those are also the audiences who make or break a film.

This could be a huge summer hit with the right tweaks.

i think carnaval del barrio will be one of the biggest movie musical moments ever. i can’t even imagine what the people’s reaction in the theatre is gonna be like. i know for a fact that it will be a huge carnaval in the audience as well and it will be a beautiful thing.

I saw the trailer before Onward tonight and thought it looked absolutely terrible. I'll see the movie eventually but I wouldn't spend any money on it to see it in theaters from what I saw.
