Okay, I know the lead singer of The Village People was straight, but I thought the rest were gay. Here is a slideshow of out celebs and it states that Glenn Hughes was straight and David Hodo's sexuality is undisclosed.

If I'm not mistaken Filpe was written as straight in Can't Stop the Music but, often, came off as otherwise.

We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".
They were all written as straight in their movie, eris...but that was 1980. I assumed they all came out by now...not just Randy and Felipe.

Yes, I know they were written as straight but, if I remember correctly, Felipe was the only one who couldn't seem to pull it off. It's been quite some time since I've seen the movie but I recall Felipe trying to pick up a woman and just having to laugh.

How are they "written straight" in CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC? I realize they don't outright state they are gay, but the movie operates on a wink-wink, "we know" what these guys are about level. Their "careers" are portrayed as heterosexual macho ideals, but nothing in the way they work together or behave suggests an attempt to make them appear straight. Even when the guy bursts in and strips while singing "My body" they all giggle and act ... well, about as straight as THE VILLAGE PEOPLE.

The thing is, the first time I saw all the straight people at a wedding doing the arm gestures I thought, where did they get that? The VP never did those motions. What's funny is that they do now.
Interestingly..I found an article/interview with a few of the VPs, including Hodo, and they claim that the arm gestures were choreographed for them...they thought they were stupid, but audiences really reacted to them, and the song took off. They also credit the arranger for making what was a stupid song such a hit, and that it's not a gay anthem and they lyrics are not gay...(paraphrasing Randy Jones). http://www.spin.com/articles/ymca-oral-history
I saw another article that Hodo never came out, even to this day...I wonder why? He is still performing with them, along with Randy and Felipe who are both out. In this day and age, is he afraid he wont be cast on Law and Order? Not to judge, just seems odd to me.
Hughes died years ago, so I assume that there is confusion between him and his replacement.

Whatever happened to Victor Willis the original lead singer of the Village People? He was with them for the first couple of hits then disappeared. I seem to recall a couple of years ago reading that he was up on some drug charges. Anyone?
Edit. I've just looked him up on Wikipedia. I'd forgotten that he was once married to Phylicia Rashad who he met when they were both in THE WIZ.
