For fans of Drum Corps International, I went to one of the first regional competitions last weekend in Rockford, IL. I saw Cavaliers, Phantom Regiment, Madison Scouts, Colts, Carolina Crown and Blue Stars. Cavvies came out on top with a fantastic new show called "Samurai". It could have been really cheesy, but as usual, the Cavvies pulled it off as a force to be reckoned with. Phantom Regiment resurrected their "Spartacus" show from the early 80s and unlike the Cavvies, it reeked of cheese as far as I was concerned. They placed 2nd, but I'm assuming it was only because they sponsored the event. The show lacks focus, direction and commitment. I was sorely disappointed by one of my favorite corps.
Speaking of disappointment, the Madison Scouts have a LONG way to go if they want to make the finals this year, placing in the bottom for the night. Showing potential were the Blue Stars, with an impressive and inventive "Tour de France"-inspired show. If they can tighten it up, they could be playing with the big boys soon. The Colts delivered a respectable show, though I honestly don't remember much about it other than a parade of Sinatra tunes because they were quickly overshadowed by the delightful Carolina Crown. Crown put together a whopping list of famous classical themes playfully unified in a somewhat vaudevillian style in a show called "Finis" that is pure whimsical joy from start to finish.
I wish I was going to be in town for the finals this year, but alas, I'll have to catch the much-edited watered-down highlights on ESPN, I suppose.

Aww...the Cavs are my fave Corp! Glad they are looking good this year. I heard that they are not going to broadcast the finals anymore...is that true? I couldnt find them last year, even with tivo!

Go Cavvies! My dad marched snare with them '80-'82. We can't make it to any shows this year, unfortunately. I find the ESPN broadcast to be a waste of time because they don't cover the entire ten minutes of each corps' show! I'm fine with seeing the behind the scenes stuff but if I don't get to see the entire show I don't see a point to it. If the finals aren't on ESPN this year, I'm pretty sure that one movie theatre chain still broadcasts them.
PBS stopped broadcasting the entire shows for each finalist in the 90s. I remember the finals were broadcast at AMC in my neighborhood, but only for one night, so if you're not available, you're screwed. And DCI charges $80-100 for a DVD of the finals. It's an expensive hobby.
I did get my 60th anniversary Cavvy cap, though.

They only show prelims in the theaters...it would be nice if they did show finals there this year(I hate the edited version on ESPN and buying the dvds are expensive)...I might have to watch it on the website...I have an ex student(I was his guard instructor) who marches guard for the cadets...he is in his 2nd year and will be marching on the rifle line this year...I have a couple of kids auditioning next year...I was lucky next year cause my student bought me the dvd because I convinced him to try out....I love DCI and I am going to two shows this year...the one at WCU and Allentown

Sorry for bringing up an old post, but I know ESPN usually shows DCI finals sometime over labor day weekend, and I was wondering if anyone knew when they will be on this year...
I'm not sure when it is, but I enjoy watching it. Actually, one of the girls from my college marching band is in the Jersey Surf color guard. I think they are only division 2 or whatever they call that stuff though.
