Score : 6/2- I LIKE IT re: Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on PYMALION (with stage door pictures )

Based on classical myth, Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion plays on the complex business of human relationships in a social world. Phonetics Professor Henry Higgins tutors the very Cockney Eliza Doolittle, not only in the refinement of speech, but also in the refinement of her manner. When the end result produces a very ladylike Miss Doolittle, the lessons learned become much more far reaching. The successful musical My Fair Lady was based on this Bernard Shaw classic. (from bartleby.com/138/)

I think the last time that this play was revived was in 1926 at the Guild Theater. After almost 81 years, Roundabout has revived this play with a full broadway productions with Claire Danes (from last summer's movie 'Stardust") . I am very fortunate to see this specially my generation is probably only familiar with the Lerner & Loewe's My Fair Lady the Musical. I had a chance to see where the musical was originally based. It was an oppurtunity - Honestly.. I was suprised NOT to hear any lines that goes .. The Rain in Spain pour mainly in the Plain nor see the fabulous Derby Race & Eliza's visit to the Buckingham Palace. I will say though, that I was not disappointed...This time I understood deeply what the play is all about without any music- I will probably describe the play as more of a BACKGROUND to MY FAIR LADY or Its is the SOUL of the musical.

6 Things I LIKE about the play (out of 10)

1. Jefferson Mays- I will start with the FIRST thing I REALLY REALLY LIKE about the play.. The brillant Jefferson Mays... He is almost a different person here than the last timeI saw him in Journey's End. Totally took over Prof. Higgins' character as I never seen before.... insecure, mama's boy & a little bit scary at the end....

2. Boyd Gaines- he's always dependable. Though I must admit I did not realized that Col. Pickering has more role in the play than the musical..

3. Okay.. Claire Danes....Honestly I will say.. that I LIKE her.. but with all the hype that this message board is giving her.. Dont get me wrong.. She is good..but not that GREAT ! The first two minutes I had to re-adjust undertanding her with her accent. I did not even recognized her - she sounds soo different...I got used to her accent afterwards. She is good but again she is sharing the stage with great actors.

4. The Story : I really like it.. as I mentioned earlier . its like a background... the play skipped a lot- what do I mean ? they dont have the scene where Higgins is teaching Eliza how to speak properly , the Buckingham scene... as everyone would expect )they just showed Eliza in ACT 2 coming home after her truimphant debut at a social party with the upper class . But I really like how the characters was EXPOSED in the play almost exposing their souls...specially Prof. Higgins & Eliza

5. The dialogue by George Bernard Shaw- after all this years .. it is still funny yet very clever

6. Lastly... Jay O. Sanders as Eliza's father ( Alfred Doolittle ) - had very great presence onstage, he was good in projecting his voice (btw- I dont think the actors were have microphones in the play- I thought I mentioned it) he is very funny !

2 Things I DONT LIKE about the play (out of 10)

1. The sets- suprisingly I was bit disappointed with the scenery.. I was very curious about the Rain Scene at the begining ( Covent Garden) basically its just two colums with three street post lamps at the background and rain effect (like the one they use in 110 in the Shade ) but in a straight line...with black background... very dark

-two more sets .. Prof. Higgins' laboratory & Mrs Higgins parlor- nothing spectacular- IMO.

2. Costumes.. I was not really impressed with the costumes.. It probbably my fault too. I was probably expecting ballroom gowns.. though Eliza's has one gown in the play.. its purple , pretty but not that great.

In Summary : I was really glad that I made a decision that I wont constantly watch or focus on one show ( I am not implying anything- just expressing my thoughts) that I will expand my horizons. I am learning more thru watching varieties of shows. Some are good, Some are godawful.. but nevertheless, Ive learned something..
and can't wait to spread my wings someday...but as one would ponder? ..what happen after the learning process (or experiment - as Eliza would hate to call it ? ) Its up to us.. whether to use that in a negative way by making other feel bad about themselves - like Prof. Higgins (like we knew better than others - we have more knowledge about Broadway, or were better in grammar or we have better taste ? )

I hope that I use all the knowledges and experiences in a positive way someday by helping other people.-and that's what a butterfly is supposed to be
... a true metamorphosis ! re: Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on PYMALION (with stage door pictures )

PYGMALION has been revived numerous times in New York since that 1926 production that you mention, most recently just two years ago by the Jean Cocteu Rep Company off-Broadway (a terrific production) and in 1991 at the Union Square Theatre w/ Anthony Heald, Earle Hyman and Madeleine Potter. The last Broadway revival was in 1987 w/ Peter O'Toole, Amanda Plummer and Sir John Mills and there had been Broadway revivals prior to that in both 1938 and 1945.

Also, Gregory Clarke is the credited sound designer for the production (and David Stephen Baker is the associate sound designer), so there is amplification for this production (as there is for pretty much every Broadway production -- musical and nonmusical), it's simply more subtle than it is for most musicals (even though the actors don't wear body mics).

Additional notes : In case your wonderin'

1. Boyd Gaines- came out at the front door, that's why I did not catch him at the 43rd St Stage Door.

2. 43rd St Stage Door Experience- There were six people , including myself outside. Claire Danes came out first.. she was very gracious and prepared (actually she had a blue marker with her - see her autograph above) she talked for 2-3 mins... that Asian girl in the pic asked her .. How was the transition from screen to stage? she answered her back nicely. Its probabbly one of the most orderly stage door experience I had. no barricades.... I think she use the 43rd street to exit where her car is waiting....same with Jefferson Mays.

Edit : Claire Danes- I did not realized that she is soo skinny, she's tall though like 5'8.I think so ? but she's very thin .. like 90 -110 lbs... very pretty in person re: jaystarr's 10/10 Report on PYGMALION (with stage door pictures )

3. Michael Arden- he sat across my seat. I talked to him during the intermission, he was very nice. No one knew who he was , except me re: jaystarr's 10/10 Report on PYGMALION (with stage door pictures ) - very very nice guy .. I saw him again at the stage door...

i echo what you said about her being way too thin. in one of my favorite movies she's in "The Family Stone" is when i first noticed it. i suppose she's always been thin but it's become more & more noticeable.

Sometimes a person who came up with an invention or the best idea does not end up getting the proper recognition in their lifetime that he/she deserves, unless History correct that mistake or Art itself, in the form of Theater . The new play by Aaron Sorkin ( The West Wing) is about the lives of Philo Farnsworth (Jimmi Simpson), an American Inventor . He was the first to make a working electronic image pickup device as being narrated by David Sarnoff (Hank Azaria) a Russian-born American bussinessman and pioneer of American commercial radio and television. He founded the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) and led the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) also being narrated by Philo Farnsworth, almost as they knew one another intimately, a device that this playwright wrote and intervewed brillantly. Like the previous tenant of this theater, the play focus on the two main characters, how television was invented and how the invention survived thru the Great Depression and made it thru our living room in the 50's
and 60's until the time of another milestone. Man landing in the moon as we
had witnessed it thru the invention of Philo Farnsworth that is called 'Television'.

As Philo Farnsworth mentioned in the play.. We are all explorers in this world and we somehow change the history of the world bec. we interact with one another. Even though that humble person did not get any recognition, change has alreday been made. His contribution already changed the way we see things today and there's no denying that one person's contribution or invention changed the world forever.

2 Things I LIKE about the play (out of 10)

1. Jimmi Simpson -is really the star of this show.. he is very good in the role of Philo Fransworth.

2. Hank Azaria- very funny... I cant remember how many times he said the F word in the play.. It would been a dull and boring play, if they did not utter the F word a million times Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on FARNSWORTH INVENTION (Part 1 of my B-day Bash )

3 Things I DID NOT LIKE about the play (out of 10)

1. The set. The set look exactly like this (see below) same set that was used in La Jolla Productions. The secong floor railings , the eliptical stairs (located on Stage Left) and all the furniture, mostly table & chairs are all in RED. There's a couple of chandelier that they used in the play that hang up and down.
Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on FARNSWORTH INVENTION (Part 1 of my B-day Bash )

2. The Story- suprisingly I did not like the story. I got so bored ! considering I love American history so much. I was not very sympathetic towards the characters, probbably bec. the play is very, very, very technical. The story is basically about a guy from Idaho who was brilliant and invented television only to be stolen from him and die penniless. - that's about it ! and a cunning RCA CEO ..

3. The Direction of Des McAnuff - Actually he spoke at the beginning at the 2 pm matinee. I thought he used the same style as JERSEY BOYS.. almost same staging, same wise guy character and same blocking. I thought they are going to burst into "Sherry " with projections on the stage.

In Summary

SPOILER BELOW ******

David Sarnoff (Hank Azaria ) mentioned at the end of the play ... that his last meeting with Philo Farnsworth was memorable ... the only thing is he made that all up....Same thing with me....if someone would asked me if I like the play .. I CAN say .. its a great play, very well written and great acting... The only thing is I will make that all up too... In reality .. I got bored. Its a good play and I am sure a lot of people here will like it. Its just not my type of play. I could say that I LIKE IT too... but I am not David Sarnoff.. I am more of a Philo Farnsworth and I will go with my guts. Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on FARNSWORTH INVENTION (Part 1 of my B-day Bash )

My reaction was similar to yours, but slightly more favorable. I didn't love it, but enjoyed it, and loved Simpson as the title character. And I too felt most of the production elements were ripped off from Jersey Boys - it bugged. The set especially is almost exactly the same, though it was nicely versatile.

This is probably the most anticipated musical this season. In all honesty before I went to see this show.. I have to admit shamefully that I have my prejudices against this musical bec. I dont like Mel Brooks, plus the show is very expensive.. tickets are $ 450.00, $120.00, $ 80.00 and $60.00 . But I went with an open mind and went out enjoying and humming some of the songs. YES.. I said it... I LIKE THE SHOW ! I hate to give it to Mr. Brooks bec. his ego is already big ... but I have to admit the man has a knack for writting musicals.. and I think this musical would run for a long time. Its not the greatest musical but its very funny and definitely a crowd pleaser.

WARNING : SPOILERS BELOW

9 Things I like about the play (out of 10)

I have to start with the cast bec. I really like them..

1. Megan Mullally- she is very funny and can sing very well with high notes, specially her TITS Part in "Pls Dont Touch Me " in Act 1, unfortunately that's all her role in Act 1 ...I love her sexual overt song, "Deep Love" - very vulgar but soo funny.. with lyrics like I want Deep Love, Firm Love refering to The Monster's you know what..that's its very funny !

2. Sutton Foster- This girl cannot do anything wrong with my book. If I am straight & single . I will propose to her.. I just adore this girl so much ! Love her "Yo de- le hi- hu" part
Roll in The Hay...

3. Andrea Martin.. I love her too... 1 word for my beloved... Xanadu muses...(everybody knows how I adore Mary Testa & Jackie Hoffman) BEWARE !

4. Chris Fitzgerald- I love his song duo with Matt LaBlanca "Together Again"

5. Fred Applegate as Hermit ..suprisingly he is very funny ...

6. "Putting on the Ritz " song - this is probably the best song, very well chreographed, very old fashion big Broadway Production number. Love everything about it specially when all the ensemble came out in Monster shoes's , hat & everything!

7. The sets- specially the "Life, Life" song .. when the bed was raise up for the lightning- one word- FIREWORKS !

8. Mel Brooks' book- I think it was so hilarous.. I am not going to give a lot of things..but watch out for these:

a. exchange of brains and size of who know what between Dr. Frank & the Monster... I think that's what SIZE MATTERS refer too Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (with stage door pics )

b. I have a blind date...

c. We need one thing that this town always wants !!!! What ? ..... a gay bar !

9. Some songs are very memorable : my favorites

-Please Don't Touch Me ?
-Together Again
-Roll in the Hay
-Join the Family Business
-He Vas my Boyfriend
-Life, Life
-Transylania Mania
_Please Send Me Someone
-Deep Love

3 Things I did not like about the play (out of 10)

1. Some songs are like (the idea ) songs from Producers
-The Happiest Town
-The Brain- ( I dont like this song actually)
-He's Loose

2. I wish I saw Roger Bart .. it seems like I have a curse on the Hilton .. I missed Stephanie J. Block on Pirate Queen too and saw Kathy Votko, though Matt was very good... but I was told by someone (secret) that roger was Better !

3. Its expensive and not a lot of discount ( I dont know if that counts, but in my book - it does ) Its good that its my birthday bec. I wont be able to stomach paying $120.00 for 1 show where I am seeing almost all the shows in town.

In Summary : We had the blast . My husband Chris loved the show soo much.. I wish I can see this show again, if its not just soo f**** expensive. I cannot shell out another $120.00 again. Its a good show and It was entertaining the moment you are watching the show. The only problem with it~it does not stick with you for the longest time, meaning memorable, though we had fun..its good while it last!

Did Sutton not come out?

Also, was that a security guard with Megan? I assume you couldn't take pictures with her, only of her...

Sutton Foster did not come out.

Yes .. Megan Mullally has a body guard. You can take pictures of her but not with her bec. that would take her forever to get out. The line was soooo looooong ! same case with Claire Danes and I heard ... Jennifer Gardner..

1. I love Chris Fitzgerald.

2. YAY! BIG JUSTIN! aka Justin Patterson from All Shook Up being back on Broadway! =)

Glory, the t-shirts were $25. I didn't find out the price of the back packs, but I'd guess $35-40.

Forbidden Broadway : Rude Awakening is probbably the most funniest show that I have seen .. I mean.. I was laughing from beginning till the end. Its really worth the money. Its very well written . For starters ..Forbidden Broadway is a parody of all the current musicals that is playing on Brodway right now. It would help , if you seen most of it. But if not- you'll still get the jokes. The cast are very talented and they can sing theyre asses off. I highly recommend this show. Its really a hidden treasure. I dont think I have list of things I dont like bec. I was laughing from so hard and I totally forgotten that we have to drive back to Boston for 4 hours that night .But here are my top 10 favorite parodies.. I will try not to give all of it bec.I want you to spend your money and see it for yourself !

Top 10 Parodies that I LOVE !

1. Spring Awakening : I think I have mentioned before that I like Spring Awakening , but I thought It was overrated. The show makes fun of the chreoraphy, cast doubling , lyrics and cussing....I love that part where Melchior unzipped his pants and took the mic from his fly... so f*** hilarious !

2. Company Parody specially on Raul Esparza's expense. I love him so much but I was laughing soo hard.. when they are singing..."Unaccompanied" where everyone is playing their instrument and they are off-key ! and Raul's Being Intense number with a little white column that they put on the top of the piano - oh my god !!

Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on Forbidden Broadway : Rude Awakening

3. Mamma Mia , Grease & Xanadu parodies (thru the tune of Summer Love from Grease , but "Dummer Broadway"- the Cheyenne Jackson is soo funny, I am not giving it away, okay ?

4. Spamalot Parody - Who copied who ? Eric Idle of Monty Python - Are you still p*ssed ?
Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on Forbidden Broadway : Rude Awakening

5. Disney Parody with Little Mermaid now- I love the part where Ariel sings.. Now Broadway is a part of Disney World now !! (like Magic Kingdom, Epcott..etc...)
Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on Forbidden Broadway : Rude Awakening

6. Grey Gardens..... instead of S-T-A-U-N-C-H ---- its C-L-O-S-E-D ! Great shows closed on Broadway...Intelligent shows does not last...

7. Curtains Parody ... "Slow People" refering to tourist Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on Forbidden Broadway : Rude Awakening

8. Les Miserables- the rotating stage mock, On my Phone ! ( audience texting out of boredness...) and One More Day !!!- it will run for 10 yrs more....

9. Coast of Utopia Marathon..Its a play but they included this with some of the worst show on Broadway like Grease... I was laughing soo hard bec. I did not like COU- and they are making fun of me Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on Forbidden Broadway : Rude Awakening

10. They added new stuff like John Travolta from Hairpsray movie and Merryl Streep from Mamma Mia movie...."You can stop the Camp " featuring Ms. Laura Bell Bundy !

Its so entertaining .... and Dont be afraid to try off- Broadway shows..sometimes they are the best shows in town Jaystarr's 10/10 Report on Forbidden Broadway : Rude Awakening
