A special fundraiser to benefit the Alabama Shakespeare Festival's renowned Shakespeare Garden and the theatre's Intern Company will take place in the garden on Monday, May 2 at 7 p.m. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of an hour-long version of Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Gates to the garden open at 6 p.m. with music, food and cash bar. ASF staff and several resident artists will be in attendance. The Intern Company, resident artists and guests will mingle with the crowd after the show.

Tickets for this benefit are $20 for adults and $10 for children 16 and under. They may be obtained through the ASF Box Office, on line at www.asf.net or by calling 800.841.4273. Tickets will also be available at the door on the night of the event.

The primary purpose of the fundraiser is to replace aging benches in the beautiful garden. The benches cost approximately $500 a piece. Ultimately, ASF would like to replace all 16 benches.

"Our master gardener, Karen Weber, asked if we could do anything to replace the old benches," said ASF's chief operating officer Michael Vigilant. "Our team thought a public showcase performance by our talented actors in the garden would be a great opportunity. For all of those folks who enjoy the grounds, participation in this event is a wonderful way to give back."

ASF's versatile and talented intern company has performed in this season's Peter Pan, Much Ado About Nothing, Julius Caesar and House at Pooh Corner. They also toured this one-hour production of Macbeth to schools across the state. In May, they will return to New York City to continue their theatrical careers. The Intern Company consists of Kevin Callaghan, Erik Gullberg, Tara L. Herwig, Tyler Jakes, Caitlin McGee, Seth D. Rabinowitz and Corey Triplett.

In case of rain, the event will take place in the Octagon theatre at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is among the largest Shakespeare theatres in the world. Designated as The State Theatre of Alabama, ASF has been located in Montgomery since 1985 when it moved from Anniston as a result of Mr. and Mrs. Wynton M. Blount's gift of a performing arts complex set in the 250-acre Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park. This program/project has been made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts
