«I am the enemy you killed, my friend...» (Je suis l’ennemi que vous avez tue?, mon ami). Les vers du poe?te britannique Wilfred Owen, te?moin et victime de la Premie?re Guerre mondiale font du War Requiem de Benjamin Britten un manifeste de re?sistance artistique et d’accusation contre l’absurdite? de la guerre. Britten a compose? ce bouleversant requiem profane, sans conteste l’un des chefs-d’œuvre du XXe sie?cle, a? l’occasion de l’inauguration de la nouvelle cathe?drale de Coventry en 1962. Il a opte? pour une alternance originale entre la messe des morts liturgique – interpre?te?e par une soprano et un grand orchestre symphonique – et son adaptation musicale des poe?mes d’Owen – chante?e par un te?nor et un baryton accompagne?s d’un orchestre de chambre. L’art peut-il sauver le monde? «All a poet can do today is warn» (Tout ce que peut faire un poe?te aujourd’hui, c’est pre?venir), a dit Owen, et Britten en a fait le mot d’ordre de sa partition...
“I am the enemy you killed, my friend...” De poe?zie van de Britse dichter Wilfred Owen, ooggetuige van de Eerste Wereldoorlog die sneuvelde in de laatste dagen van het conflict, maakt Benjamin Brittens War Requiem tot een artistiek verzet en een aangrijpende aanklacht tegen de zinloosheid en onmenselijkheid van oorlog. Dit indrukwekkende, profane requiem, ongetwijfeld een van de grote meesterwerken van de 20ste eeuw, componeerde Britten voor de inhuldiging van de nieuwe kathedraal van Coventry in 1962. Hij koos voor een originele en beklijvende afwisseling van de liturgische dodenmis, gebracht door een sopraansolo en een groot symfonisch orkest, met zettingen van oorlogsgedichten van Owen, gebracht door tenor- en baritonsolo met kamerorkest. Kan kunst de wereld redden? “All a poet can do today is warn”, zei Owen, en Britten maakte dit tot motto van zijn partituur...

The poetry of the British poet Wilfred Owen, eyewitness and victim of the First World War, made Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem into an act of artistic resistance and an indictment of the senselessness of war. Britten composed this impressive secular requiem, which is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of the 20th century, for the inauguration of the new Coventry Cathedral in 1962. He opted for an original and compelling alternation of the liturgical requiem mass – performed by a solo soprano and a large orchestra – with settings of Owen’s war poems – performed by a solo tenor and baritone with a chamber orchestra. Can art save the world? ‘All a poet can do today is warn’, said Owen, and Britten made this the motto of his score.
