«I am the enemy you killed, my friend...» (Je suis l’ennemi que vous avez tue?, mon ami). Les vers du poe?te britannique Wilfred Owen, te?moin et victime de la Premie?re Guerre mondiale font du War Requiem de Benjamin Britten un manifeste de re?sistance artistique et d’accusation contre l’absurdite? de la guerre. Britten a compose? ce bouleversant requiem profane, sans conteste l’un des chefs-d’œuvre du XXe sie?cle, a? l’occasion de l’inauguration de la nouvelle cathe?drale de Coventry en 1962. Il a opte? pour une alternance originale entre la messe des morts liturgique – interpre?te?e par une soprano et un grand orchestre symphonique – et son adaptation musicale des poe?mes d’Owen – chante?e par un te?nor et un baryton accompagne?s d’un orchestre de chambre. L’art peut-il sauver le monde? «All a poet can do today is warn» (Tout ce que peut faire un poe?te aujourd’hui, c’est pre?venir), a dit Owen, et Britten en a fait le mot d’ordre de sa partition...

Dit indrukwekkende, profane requiem, ongetwijfeld een van de grote meesterwerken van de 20ste eeuw, componeerde Britten voor de inhuldiging van de nieuwe kathedraal van Coventry in 1962. Hij koos voor een originele en beklijvende afwisseling van de liturgische dodenmis, gebracht door een sopraansolo en een groot symfonisch orkest, met zettingen van oorlogsgedichten van Owen, gebracht door tenor- en baritonsolo met kamerorkest. He opted for an original and compelling alternation of the liturgical requiem mass – performed by a solo soprano and a large orchestra – with settings of Owen’s war poems – performed by a solo tenor and baritone with a chamber orchestra. January 03, 2022 The last time the famous tenor Mark Padmore trod the boards at la Monnaie, he treated us to a magnificent recital of works by Beethoven and Schumann. Having previously performed at La Monnaie in Don Giovanni (Mozart), The Rake's Progress (Stravinsky), La clemenza di Tito (Mozart), and War Requiem (Britten), he returns this season with his regular collaborator, the pianist Simon Lepper, in a programme that combines French mélodies, German lieder, and an extensive selection of English-language songs.
