MACBETH to Open at Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège with Bisanti, Poda

The Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège will open its 2026–2027 season with Giuseppe Verdi's Macbeth, a work the company describes as marking a turning point in the composer's career as the first of three operas Verdi would devote to Shakespeare.

Turning away from traditional romantic plots, Verdi created a dark and gripping drama in which ambition, murder and madness take centre stage. Chosen to open the 2026–2027 season, Macbeth stands as one of the most striking expressions of the season theme, Powers, Desires. Through the rise and fall of the Macbeth couple, Verdi explores the destructive consequences of desire transformed into a thirst for domination and of a quest for power carried to the point of obsession.

A World in Constant Transformation

For this new production, Stefano Poda takes on the roles of director, set designer, Costume Designer, lighting designer and choreographer. His approach brings to the surface the contradictions and fractures that run through the characters, within a visual universe in perpetual transformation. Translucent structures, modular volumes and shifting spaces create an unstable world that reflects the turmoil of the drama and lays bare the mechanisms of ambition, fear and guilt.

Two Distinguished Interpreters of the Title Roles

At the helm of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège Orchestra and Chorus, Giampaolo Bisanti returns to a work he has conducted on several occasions throughout his career, notably in Vienna. The cast is led by two artists with extensive experience of the title roles: Luca Micheletti, who recently portrayed Macbeth in Turin after performing the role in Ravenna and Tokyo, and Ewa Płonka, who has already appeared as Lady Macbeth on major international stages including Washington, Zurich, La Scala in Milan, Philadelphia and Deutsche Oper am Rhein. They are joined by Gianluca Buratto (Banco), Matteo Desole (Macduff), Alexandra Grigoras (Dama di Lady Macbeth), Lorenzo Martelli (Malcolm) and Luca Dall'Amico (Un medico).
