“Beethoven broke all the rules and turned out pieces of breathtaking rightness. He had the real goods, the stuff from Heaven, the power to make you feel at the finish: Something is right with the world.” Beethoven’s iconic fifth symphony needs no introduction. Composed in a period of violent turmoil as Napoleon’s armies were marching across Europe, as well as personal turmoil (Beethoven was rapidly going deaf) it remains a heroic sounding work, a whirlwind of energy, filled with triumph. After the high drama of Beethoven, enjoy one of Mozart’s most popular and endearing serenades, Eine kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Night Music). An excerpt from Haydn’s Symphony No. 8 in G major. Nicknamed Le Soir (The Evening) concludes this splendid program. This trio of works from Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn is a perfect sample of the breadth of beauty found in the Classical period.
