Registration Now Open for Fall Classes at Howard County Center for the Arts

Registration has begun for Howard County Arts Council's (HCAC) fall educational programs at the Howard County Center for the Arts (HCCA) in Ellicott City. HCAC offers classes and workshops for ages five to adult. Fall art programs, open to the public, begin the week of September 8, 2014.

Rehearsals begin Tuesday for Amadeus, the first show in Center Stage's 2014/15 Season. Helmed by Center Stage Artistic Director Kwame Kwei-Armah, the production begins previews Sept. 10 and runs until Oct. 12.

Olney Theatre Center's National Players, America's longest-running touring company, opens their 66th Tour with Shakespeare's AS YOU LIKE IT August 27 - 31 on the Historic Stage. All the world's a stage in Shakespeare's classic love story about concealed identities and leaving home to find oneself. Running away to the woods to begin anew, Rosalind is surprised to find true love instead. Can she make a new home of this strange new world? With a little creative costuming and luck, each character creates a new life in As You Like It. (Recommended for ages 8 and up)
Round House Theatre to Stage FOOL FOR LOVE, 9/3-27

Fool for Love, by renowned playwright Sam Shepard, launches Round House Theatre's 2014/2015 season with an explosive tale of love, hate, and the dying myths of the Old West. Producing Artistic Director Ryan Rilette directs one of the great American plays of the 20th century. Fool for Love runs at Round House Theatre from September 3 thru September 27. Opening night is Monday, September 8, 2014.

A community collaboration between Maryland Ensemble Theatre's (MET) MET-X and Frederick Community College's Theatre FCC will produce the World Premiere of 'The Wizard of Odd'. In this re-interpretation of the classic tale, 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', outsider Dee finds himself in an odd fantastical world filled with strange creatures. In his journey to find his way home, he meets a trio of misfits who help him discover the true meaning of friendship, home and self worth. The 'Wizard of Odd' is coming to the JBK Theatre at Frederick Community College (7932 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick) from today, August 8 through 16.

The Howard County Arts Council is seeking nominations for the 2014 Howie Awards honoring individuals and businesses that have made significant contributions to the arts in Howard County. The awards will be presented at the Celebration of the Arts in Howard County on March 28, 2015, where members of Howard County's arts, education, government and business communities will gather. Application guidelines for the 2015 Rising Star Performing Artist Professional Development Award are now available for download by visiting the "Celebration of the Arts" page at www.hocoarts.org. Application guidelines may also be requested from the Arts Council by phone at 410-313-2787 or via email at info@hocoarts.org. The early no-fee application deadline is October 1, 2014. Applications submitted between October 2 and the final deadline of November 1 must be accompanied by a $10 application fee.

Everyman Theatre began rehearsals today for the 2014/15 season opener, The Understudy. Theresa Rebeck's comedic look into the backstage world of show biz runs from August 27th through September 28th. The three-person cast features Everyman Resident Company Members Clinton Brandhagen, Danny Gavigan and Beth Hylton. Joseph W. Ritsch makes his Everyman directorial debut with the production.
Jason Alexander Will Step in for Mandy Patinkin at BSO's SuperPops Program

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has confirmed that due a schedule conflict resulting from participation in an upcoming Broadway production, Mandy Patinkin has withdrawn from his engagement with the Orchestra, slated for January 22 at The Music Center at Strathmore and January 23-25, 2015 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. In his place, the BSO welcomes actor Jason Alexander, best known for his portrayal as George Costanza on the hit series 'Seinfeld,' in addition to his lengthy Broadway career. BSO Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly will conduct the program, featuring music and humor as Alexander reminisces about his remarkable and versatile career on the stage and screen, and performs songs from several Broadway favorites, including Music Man, Pippin and Merrily We Roll Along.
Howard County Arts Council Receives PNC Foundation Grant

The Howard County Arts Council (HCAC) has been awarded a $12,000 PNC Grow Up Great grant from the PNC Foundation for its Head StART in ART program. This grant will allow the Arts Council to continue the Head StART in ART program at the Tubman Head Start Center in Columbia for the 2014-2015 school year.
Howard County Arts Council Seeking Artists for Head StART in ART Residencies

Visual and performing artists are needed for residencies for the Head StART in ART program for the 2014-2015 school year. Residencies will take place at the Ellicott City Head Start Center or the Tubman Head Start Center in Columbia. Artists seeking a residency must have experience working with children; experience with pre-K is preferred. The performing artist residency will conclude with performances by the Head Start children. The visual artist residency will conclude with the completion of an art project for display at their Head Start Center or individual projects for students to take home.
