Maryland Opera's Free Summer Opera Camp to Return for 17th Year in Baltimore
The camp will be held July 20 through August 9 with all sessions held from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday.
The Maryland Opera Summer Camp has been identifying and nurturing young singers with an interest in voice and opera since 2010. The camp continues in 2026 with in-person sessions held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Baltimore City. The camp is offered completely free of charge through the generosity of donors who wish to encourage young vocal talent. The camp will be held July 20 through August 9 with all sessions held from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday.
Each camper will receive instruction in voice, drama, and opera/voice coaching in addition to master classes and sessions in dance, movement, yoga, wigs, make up, costumes, and stage combat. The centerpiece of the camp is "Create & Produce" in which campers will learn how an opera comes to life while creating their own opera composition.
The camp will culminate with a performance on Sunday, August 9 at 5pm at The Church of the Redeemer in North Baltimore in which the campers will perform the opera they composed during the camp as well as opera choruses and solos and a dance number.
All the campers will have the opportunity to perform at Maryland Opera's concerts on July 30 as part of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's “SummerFest” performance at Boordy Vineyards and on August 7 for MO's First Fridays at Boordy Vineyards concert.
The camp includes a movie night on Friday, July 24. This special event is free and open to the public as well as the Opera Campers and their families. Maryland Opera will present the 1984 film Amadeus featuring Tom Hulce as Mozart and F. Murray Abraham as Salieri.
The Opera Camp is completely free of charge and open to Maryland high school and college age students up to age 21. Potential campers will need to complete the application on the Maryland Opera website and submit a video recording of their singing. Applications must be submitted by June 1, 2026.
Many Opera Campers go on to have exciting careers in the operatic field. 2015 Opera Camper Julianna Smith joins the Wiener Staatsoper Opera Studio for the 26-27 and 27-28 seasons. Nina Evelyn, also from the 2015 Opera Camp, made her Washington National Opera solo debut in Treemonisha in March of this year. Both of these artists have been featured in Maryland Opera productions. MO seeks to enrich the careers of the talented young singers from Opera Camp with performance opportunities throughout the season.
Interested students residing in Maryland can apply at www.marylandopera.org/opera-camp. Applications are due by Monday, June 1, 2026.
Tickets to the additional performances at Boordy Vineyards can be found through the Maryland Opera website: www.marylandopera.org.
