Today in 2001, Mamma Mia opened at the Winter Garden Theatre, where it is still running. Mamma Mia! is a stage musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA, composed by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, former members of the band. Happy Birthday Angela Lansbury! Lansbury - who returned to Broadway in this year's revival of THE BEST MAN - has enjoyed an unprecedented career, first as a star of motion pictures, and then as an award-winning stage actor in New York and London. She appeared as Madame Armfeldt in the 2009 revival of A Little Night Music, and before that as Madame Arcati in the 2009 revival of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit, for which she won her fifth Tony Award, as well as Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. She performed in 2006 in Terrence McNally's Deuce, for which she was also nominated for a Tony Award. She made her Broadway debut in 1957 as Bert Lahr's wife in Hotel Paradiso. In 1960, she returned to Broadway as Joan Plowright's mother in the season's most acclaimed drama, A Taste of Honey, by Shelagh Delaney. A year later, she starred in her first musical, Anyone Can Whistle. Lansbury returned to Broadway in triumph in 1966 in Mame, for which she won her first Tony Award.

According to WSOC TV, a Maiden, North Carolina High School has canceled its upcoming production of Almost Maine due to controversial content. The Maiden High School principal decided to cancel the romanic comedy (which involves a same-sex couple) soon after rehearsal began, after receiving complaints from both parents and churches in the area.

Today in 2009 the first Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie opened at Henry Miller's Theatre (now the Stephen Sondheim Theatre), where it ran for 117 performances. Originally titled Let's Go Steady, the satire on American society is set in 1958. The story was inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in 1957. The original Broadway production was a Tony Award-winning success. It spawned a London production and several major revivals, a sequel, a 1963 film and a 1995 television production.

NYC-based multiplatform artist Mark MacKillop, a Vancouver native, last year completed an international tour of West Side Story in the role of Riff. The musical brought him to major cities across Europe and Israel, and by way of accommodations, their hotels as well. Rather than a written diary, MacKillop chronicled his downtime with an iPhone camera, taking over 80 high-quality, expertly composed black-and-white and color self-portraits in various hotel rooms, in very little clothing. These portraits tied together the aspects of MacKillop's career that resonate most with him; physicality, composition, reflection, and poses related to dance.

Happy Birthday Ben Vereen! On Broadway, Ben Vereen has appeared in Wicked, I'm not Rappaport, Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin, Grind, Jelly's Last Jam, and A Christmas Carol. His role in Pippin garnered him both the prestigious Tony Award and the Drama Desk award for 'Best Actor in a Musical.'
