The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture just launched its first exhibition of 2014, MOTOWN: THE TRUTH IS A HIT. Featuring items that highlight Motown's inimitable founder Berry Gordy and the institution's most beloved musical acts, the multi-media showcase chronicles one of the most significant record labels in American music history. Manhattan Theatre Club presented its annual Winter Benefit, an evening of cocktails and dinner followed by a special one-night-only cabaret-style show featuring Broadway's brightest stars last night, February 3, 2014 at The Allen Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Fredrick P. Rose Hall (Broadway & 60th Street). This year's Winter Benefit was directed by Marc Bruni (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, The Explorers Club) and featured performances by Tony Award nominee Daniel Breaker (Shrek, Passing Strange), two-time Tony Award Winner Norbert Leo Butz (Big Fish, Catch Me If You Can ), two-time Tony Award nominee Laura Osnes (Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, Bonnie & Clyde), and two-time Tony Award nominee Condola Rashad (Romeo & Juliet, The Trip To Bountiful). The 25th anniversary celebration of GYPSY OF THE YEAR, the culmination of six weeks of extraordinary fundraising by 56 participating Broadway, Off-Broadway, and national touring companies, raised an amazing $4,343,234 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The grand total was announced Tuesday, December 10, at this year's GYPSY OF THE YEAR, which included an array of original dances, songs, and skits performed by more than 250 'gypsies,' the most talented singers and dancers in the ensembles of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. Audra McDonald, Laura Benanti and Christian Borle have signed on to play Mother Abbess, Elsa Schrader and Max Dettweiler respectively. Over the weekend, hundreds of pint-sized hopefuls lined up for a chance to audition for a role as one of the Von Trapp children. Paper Mill Playhouse will launch its 75th Anniversary Season with the world-premiere, Broadway-bound musical Honeymoon in Vegas, based on the Castle Rock Entertainment motion picture of the same title. Honeymoon in Vegas features music and lyrics by Tony Award winner Jason Robert Brown (The Last Five Years, Parade, 13) and book by Andrew Bergman (director and screenwriter of the film). Gary Griffin (The Color Purple) will direct with original choreography by Denis Jones. On Monday night, some of Broadway's brightest talents sang completely new arrangements of the hits of Amy Winehouse in the most recent concert of the BROADWAY SINGS concert series. More than 20 Broadway performers were accompanied by a full band playing brand new, original orchestrations of the English singer's greatest songs.
