The Burlington Chamber Orchestra, one of Vermont's premiere orchestras, returns to Middlebury on May 21 for a concert at Town Hall Theater. The BCO was founded by a group of twenty Vermont musicians, many of whom are teachers who are responsible for music education for hundreds of students.

Starting this weekend, Friday, May 7, Chicago Street Theatre, Yeager's Greenhouse, and the Special Olympics are partnering up for a Plant and Flower Sale. The sale will be open for the remaining May weekends. Chicago Street Theatre partnered with Yeager's Greenhouses last spring and sold flowers, vegetables and herbs at the theatre. The proceeds benefited the theatre and local greenhouse. This year, for a second time, the theatre is again partnering with the Greenhouse, in addition to the Special Olympics. There will be a huge variety to choose from including: flats, hanging baskets, pre-made pots, gerbera daisies, impatiens, geraniums, wave petunias and much more.

On Saturday, April 24, nearly 700 business and arts leaders attended the Arts Council's 13th Annual Celebration of the Arts in Howard County at the Jim Rous Theatre in Columbia, Maryland. This year's annual benefit gala raised over $77,000 and an additional $80,000 in donated goods and services for the arts in Howard County.

The star-studded benefit performance also launches the University's new Dominic Missimi Fund for Music Theatre.

Today, May 4, BMI has announced that the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Librettists Workshop is now accepting applications for membership. This unique writing program is dedicated to the development and discovery of bookwriters for the musical theatre. The deadline for applicants is May 15. The application can be downloaded here.

Today, May 4, Plan-B Theatre Company announced its 2010-11 Season. Productions scheduled include SHE WAS MY BROTHER, as well as the World Premieres of MESA VERDE, BORDERLANDS, and AND THE BANNED SLAMMED ON. The 2010-11 season marks the 20th anniversary of the first Plan-B production in 1991. 12 of the past 15 Plan-B productions have enjoyed sold-out runs. Guitarist Jake Hertzog, musical director for Nickelodeon stars, Nat and Alex Wolff, is set for a Midwest Tour starting in Indianapolis, MN on May 29. The five-dater tour will finish in Urbana, IL on June 2. Hertzog is taking rhythm section Harvie S (bass) and Victor Jones (drums) on the upcoming tour in support of his new jazz CD "Patterns" (Buckyball 022).

Sire/Action Theory Records artists, The Maine, have announced the release of their new album 'Black & White' for July 13, 2010. Their major label debut is the follow-up to 'Can't Stop, Won't Stop', the band's acclaimed first album, which came out on Fearless Records in 2008.

Beginning May 24, The George Gee 17-piece Big Band will begin a weekly Monday night engagement at Harlem's newest hotspot - Gospel Uptown/GU LIVE! (Located at 2110 Seventh Avenue @ 125th Street). Featuring jazz and blues vocalist John Dokes (in the style of Joe Williams and Billy Eckstine), George Gee and his big band orchestra pay tribute to the swingin' music of Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, Chick Webb and many other Savoy Ballroom jazz icons. This marks the return of regular Big Band Jazz to Uptown NYC after a long hiatus.

Staten Island OutLOUD, a community dialogue and performance project, presents 'I've Known Rivers', poems by Langston Hughes on Saturday, May 8 at 12:30 pm. Participants will have a chance to read from Hughes' poems and discuss the African-American writer's legacy.
