BWW Review: DON'T DRESS FOR DINNER is Quick Witted and Fast Paced in Georgetown, TX.
by Amy Tarver - April 15, 2019
Venturing around the corner from the larger Palace stage in downtown Georgetown, a quaint new black box theatre sits catering to plays of a different scale but with equal gusto. DON'T DRESS FOR DINNER written by Robin Hawdon & Marc Camoletti, boasts a cast of 6 performers confusing themselves and each other during one raucous night in an English Village. Bernard (played by Jake Maspero) is married to Jacqueline (played by Beth Burroughs), who is sleeping with his best friend Robert (played by Clint Cox). In an evening that begins with Jacqueline cancelling her plans away to spend time with her lover Robert, Bernard's true intentions are quickly known as he had invited his lover Suzanne (played by Marsha Sray) to spend the evening with him. The caterer Suzette (played by Lorri Boyd) is quickly confused by Robert as Bernard's lover, forcing the real mistress Suzanne to prepare the evenings meal. The stew simmering offstage could not possibly thicken to the size of scandal and plot unfolding through Act I. Combining a fish-out-of-water comedy with a situational mess, our characters navigate an evening of surprise information, heavy drinking and of course, hilarity.

BWW Review: All Shall Know the Wonder of SPRING AWAKENING at St. Edward's University
by Madelyn Geyer - April 11, 2019
St. Edward's University's choice for their spring musical is aptly named. While the words 'spring awakening' invoke images of beautiful flowers or a warm spring day, this musical contains everything but, with central themes of sexuality, religion, abuse, suicide, guilt and repression. I'll be blunt: go see this production. The cast of St. Edwards University blesses the audience with their talent, capturing the heartbreak, hope, and surprising humor that's integral to SPRING AWAKENING, based on the 1891 German play of the same name by Frank Wedekind.
BWW Review: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST at Texas State Univeristy
by Addison McKissack - April 11, 2019
The first time I encountered THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST by Oscar Wilde I was a junior in high school. I understood that this was a fantastic play, but I didn't understand how the witty dialogue could be the uproarious comedy that my theater teacher promised me it was. That is, until I saw Texas State University's production of the "trivial comedy for serious people", which would make Wilde himself proud.
BWW Review: ROALD DAHL'S MATILDA THE MUSICAL - Joyously Magical
by Lynn Beaver - April 11, 2019
Roald Dahl's novel, MATILDA was published in 1988 to join his other popular children's books; among them, CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, THE WITCHES and BFG. In 2010 The Royal Shakespeare Company commissioned a musical version and MATILDA THE MUSICAL was born in London's West End. ZACH's production includes two youth casts, I had the opportunity to see the 'Young Orange Cast'.
BWW Review: Back in the USSR: Street Corner Arts' THE LETTERS Succeeds
by Madelyn Geyer - April 11, 2019
John Lowell's THE LETTERS, in its regional premiere courtesy of Street Corner Arts, is a two person, one act play. It begins in one place, takes us on a journey, and ends up in a place unrecognizable from where it started, all without leaving one governmental archives office in 1930s Stalinist Russia. Through one seventy-five minute long interaction, Lowell's dialogue and Michael Stuart's direction captures the utter paranoia and perpetual fear felt by citizens and leaders alike living in the Soviet Regime.

BWW Review: THE COLD BREW COLLECTION at Texas State Univeristy
by Addison McKissack - April 08, 2019
THE COLD BREW COLLECTION is a collection of five short plays written by Payton Russell. Russell is a freshman at Texas State University, and if this collection is any indication, we can expect to see even more fantastic work from her within her time at Texas State.

LAST: AN EXTINCTION COMEDY is a truly unique show about how a troupe of comedic actors copes with the apocalypse.
BWW Review: CATCH ME IF YOU CAN - Georgetown Palace Crew Soars
by Lynn Beaver - April 05, 2019
The fascinating autobiography CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, by Frank Abagnale, Jr., first made into a movie starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio is now a musical adventure. Debuting on Broadway in 2011 to mixed reviews. As a character study the story is engrossing, but as the basis for a musical, it's problematic. While it has some great moments of comedy with a touch of drama and lots of jazzy 60's music, there are certainly better crafted musicals around.
