Water Memory (Jala Smriti) is a world premiere one-act chamber opera that follows Janani, a South Asian woman navigating the early stages of dementia, and her adult children already beginning to grieve their mother. Set in a hydrangea garden, the score blends live instruments with an electronic soundscape created using Max/MSP software. Directed by Gregory Luis Boyle and conducted by Chaowen Ting, the cast features Marian Anderson Award-winner Idira Mahajan as Janani, alongside Tanushka Sisodiya, Joseph Ittoop, Samantha Burke, and Jacob Lay. The opera was composed by Kitty Brazelton with a libretto by Vaibu Mohan, developed in partnership with Georgia Tech Arts and informed by specialists in gerontology and memory-assistance technology.
