Indianapolis artist Philip Campbell's fully commissioned floor-to-ceiling carved mahogany installation offers iMOCA visitors an opportunity to experience "work that people can touch."
Over a year in the making, Campbell's solo exhibition, "Your Catfish Friend," opens this Friday from 6 to 11 p.m. at iMOCA's Murphy Art Center location at 1043 Virginia Avenue. It is a touching return to the facility as Campbell revitalized the former five and dime store building as an arts hub in 1999 before moving on to other pursuits in 2009.
Best known for his photo-realistic drawings and paintings, Campbell has also been carving for more than 20 years. The 22.5 by 11.5 foot work made for "Catfish" and consisting of 26 panels is his first installation. It will fill the middle gallery. The front gallery will feature a plethora or work Campbell used to determine the final installation. It will include studies that determined the type of wood he'd use for carving, color tests and a few paintings also completed during the year it took for him to work on the installation.
Over the last 25 years, Campbell's work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and published and collected around the world. He just finished a stint as an Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Fellow.
Design is One Film Screening
February 5, 7 p.m. at the IndyFringe Basile Theater, 719 E. St. Clair St.

Design is One, a documentary about the legendary and iconic design team of Lella and Massimo Vignelli, screens through a partnership between iMOCA and the IndyFringe. Following the screening, local designer Amy McAdams will facilitate a series of presentations by local design thought leaders.

In 1965, Massimo Vignelli brought the Helvetica typeface to the U.S., launching the new DNA of modern design. Together with his wife and creative partner Lella, the team designed the New York City subway map, and the everlasting identities of the world's premiere fashion, design and leisure brands including Knoll, Bloomingdales, Ducati, Fratelli Rosetti, Saks Fifth Avenue, the Ford Motor Company and American Airlines.

Amy McAdams will talk afterwards Jabberwocky-style with:

Jeremiah Williams

Jeremiah is a Fashion Industry professional in Indianapolis, with a focus on developing, mentoring, and challenging emerging creatives in Indianapolis. In 2007, the IndyStar listed him as one of the Top 7 Designers to watch in Indianapolis. In 2014, the IndyStar also listed him as one of the top 7 style bloggers in Indianapolis. He has appeared on Inside Indiana Business, Indy Style, and has had two appearances on the Chick McGee (from Bob and Tom) podcast. He is also a travel writer for VisitIndy.com. He launched the Pattern Store in 2014, in collaboration with Pattern and the Riley Area Development Corporation. Jeremiah is currently working on developing a program to mentor and develop emerging fashion designers in Indianapolis.

Lindsay Hadley, Borshoff Senior Art Director

An MFA graduate and former professor of AdvertisingDesign at Savannah College of Art and Design, Lindsay Hadley realized she was becoming more envious of - than excited for - her portfolio students just entering the business. Lindsay loved teaching, but the pixels, projects and Indiana called her back. Since 2009, she has worked for local, national and international clients like Silver in the City, Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, Scotts Lawn Service, Coca-Cola, Allegion and Building Tomorrow. She stays connected to the classroom from time to time, and most recently attended Milton Glaser's (of I Heart NY fame) Summer Workshop at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

WIL D MARQUEZ

Principal, wpurpose llc

Co-Founder, Design Bank llc

Marquez's philosophy is simple. It is centered on the belief that it is imperative for creative designers to seek out new solutions if they want to contribute to meaningful and relevant environments to society. That philosophy is the reason Marquez launched his own office in 2010, after over 13 years in traditional practice. Under his leadership, he has designed some of Indy's most creative public spaces, architectural installations, and has been behind some eye catching affordable housing developments. Marquez has worked and lectured all over the world, including Abu Dhabi, Buenos Aires, and Chihuahua, Mexico. In 2010 he was awarded an Emerging Designer Award at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and has been featured in multiple local publications for his efforts in architecture and design.
