Transgender Actor MJ Rodriguez Thanks Telsey + Company For HAMILTON Audition
Transgender actress M.J. Rodriguez used her Facebook page to publicly thank HAMILTON's casting directors at Telsey + Company for the opportunity to audition for the role of Peggy Schuyler.
"This makes me so happy to know they are aware of the Transgender community," she writes. "To me a callback or booking wasn't my goal, my goal was to just be seen as the woman I have become, as well as show I can do the work."
Rodriguez received a 2011 Clive Barnes Award for her performance as Angel in the Off-Broadway revival of RENT.
HAMILTON opened on August 6, 2015 at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre. I was in an audience of theatre fans watching an onstage conversation between Frank Rich and Stephen Sondheim and the subject of unauthorized changes made in regional and amateur productions came up. The composer/lyricist mentioned that he had heard of a production of Company that ended with Bobby committing suicide by shooting himself.
